The Easiest (And Cutest) Way To Fight For Gender Equality

Guys! I’ve officially found one of the coolest 13-year-old girls ever. Her name is McKenna Pope, she’s from New Jersey and she’s totally ready to join the fight for gender equality, in the form of Easy-Bake Ovens.

McKenna created a video using her adorable little brother to try to get some support for her Change.org petition, which asks Hasbro to put a little boy on its Easy-Bake Oven boxes. This might be the cutest plea for gender equality that I’ve ever seen. It might be because I’m a sucker for little kids with adorable voices, but I’m pretty sure anyone would have a hard time not doing exactly what these two kids ask.

In the video, McKenna’s little brother tells us exactly what he wants for Christmas: “I want a dinosaur and an Easy-Bake Oven!” He goes on to point out that the Easy-Bake Oven is only marketed towards girls – there are only girls in the commercials and on the box. And, let’s face it, he’s right. When you think of an Easy-Bake Oven, what kind of image pops into your head: two little girls fooling around with it or two boys?

He goes on to say that he doesn’t know “how and why they only put girls in the commercial” and it made me realize that I don’t know how or why that happened either. Why is cooking something that only girls can do? Why can’t guys cook? Um, they can, and they do, a lot. So I can’t really understand why Easy-Bake Ovens wouldn’t be marketed towards boys as well as girls.

This toy is just a small part of the issue with gender equality. According to society, there are some toys that are for boys (video games, action figures) and some that are for girls (dolls, Easy-Bake Ovens). While the ads don’t say that they’re just for one gender, they definitely imply it. I think it stinks that little boys like this kid think they can’t use Easy-Bake Ovens because they assume it’s for girls only. As McKenna says in the video, “Is this really the message we want to send to our youth? I thought that as a society, we had far moved past that. But no, we continue to force the stereotype that men don’t cook, they work.”

Watch this adorable video to see more of what these two have to say. And if you’re looking to inspire some change, sign McKenna’s petition!

Do you agree with McKenna? Are you going to sign her petition? Or do you think there should be separate toys for boys and girls? Tell me in the comments!

My dad is the best cook in our house, with me as 2nd. I hate when people say women are the cooks of the house, because my dad makes a crap load more of delicious food than my mom does.
