Guess what? “Backstreet’s back, alright!” Wait a second, did the Backstreet Boys ever really go away? As I was writing this, I looked up their Wikipedia page (naturally) to check and, um, it looks like they didn’t. I mean, they had a little two-year hiatus, and then Kevin Richardson left them for a while, but they’ve pretty much been together since 1993.
But now the original five are all officially back together in one happy little boy band and are re-joining the music scene. And what better way to rejoin the music scene then to release a Christmas song, appropriately titled “It’s Christmas Time Again”? It’s joyful, it’s festive, it’s fun… I guess it’s something we can all appreciate over a delicious cup of hot chocolate. Except, and maybe this is just me, but I feel like Halloween never even happened and now it’s Christmas. Oh, I guess because Halloween didn’t happen in New York because Hurricane Sandy happened instead. But that’s not the point.
I have mixed feelings about this sort-of reunion. On the one hand, I love me some BSB. When I was younger, I was totally a Backstreet fan instead of an NSYNC fan and I supported my boys all the way. I put posters of them in my room and drew ugly mustaches on the faces of those stupid NSYNC dudes. I still remember my first BSB concert – I went with my cousin, who cried most of the time because she was so happy to be there (I mostly stared at her and felt uncomfortable. I’m sorry, but I will never be one of those girls who cries over seeing a band live). BSB floated down from the ceiling on these little hovercraft things and landed on the stage in a cloud of smoke and I pretty much thought it was the coolest thing ever. So, sure, it’s cool to see new music from my favorite childhood band.
On the other hand, I kind of wish that the Backstreet Boys stayed in the ’90s. Don’t get me wrong, I love nostalgia (I do write the weekly flashback articles on this site), but I kind of think there are some things that should just be left alone. I mean, yeah, boy bands are totally trendy again (hello One Direction), but the guys in BSB are just… well… old. Sorry. But it’s kind of hard to crush on them when they could sort of be your dad, and isn’t crushing on boy band members the best thing about liking boy bands?
But enough with all the words… here’s the part I know you were waiting for. Their new Christmas song! Listen to it for yourself:
What do you think about this Backstreet Boys reunion? Are you excited? Do you agree with me that they’re a little too old? Are you going to get their new CD? Tell me in the comments!
