The other day, I was offered a pumpkin flavored Pop-Tart at a friend’s house. Wait, let me repeat that. A pumpkin flavored Pop-Tart. I mean, come on! Obviously I declined, because who can honestly tell me that those sound delicious?
Don’t get me wrong – I love the flavor of pumpkin and pumpkins in general. Pumpkin spice coffee is my favorite kind of coffee, I could eat pumpkin seeds every single day of my life and I make an absolutely delicious pumpkin pie (if I do say so myself). I’m on board with pumpkin pancakes and pumpkin muffins. This year, I went pumpkin picking three separate times. I love pumpkins… and apparently so does the rest of the world, because this whole pumpkin flavored thing is getting a little out of control.
I’m not sure when pumpkin flavored foods/drinks became so popular, but I feel like it was within the last few years. It was like, one year, the only pumpkin thing you could find was the pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks – and then the next year, pumpkin was all over the place. And this year, things have just gotten out of hand. Pumpkin flavored stuff is literally everywhere you look right now, and guess what? Whoever is responsible for this is ruining pumpkins.
Did you know that in addition to pumpkin Pop-Tarts, there is also pumpkin flavored pasta? There is pumpkin pie vodka (I feel nauseous just thinking about that). There is pumpkin flavored Pringles and ice cream and macaroons and cookies. But that’s not all! There is also pumpkin flavored granola, bagels, marshmallows, butter and Jello, among other things. Am I really going to be the only one to say this? Enough is enough!
I mean, pumpkin spice Jello?! And Pringles?! That doesn’t sound appetizing to me at all. Sure, fall would not be the same without a steaming cup of pumpkin spice coffee or a yummy pumpkin donut. But I’m pretty confident when I say I think we can do without all of that other stuff.
This pumpkin overexposure is seriously ruining my love of those huge orange fruits. Why does the world always have to ruin the best things?! Haven’t we learned by now that overexposure of something great only ruins it? Who could eat all of that pumpkin stuff and not get sick of it? I used to look forward to seeing the words “pumpkin spice” on the shelves at the food store, and now I’m just like, “ugh… again? Really?”
So, thanks a lot world. Thanks a lot for ruining this wonderful fall fruit by attempting to make as much money off of it as possible. Make a note for next year to tone it down a little bit before we can’t even stomach the site of a pumpkin anymore. Although I feel like that’s not too far off.

I think the pumpkin flavored stuff should be limited to foods that kind of go along with pumpkin as it is, or are more fall-oriented (for the record, though, the ice cream has been around forever, probably longer than the lattes). Pop-tarts aren’t that bad in terms of pumpkin flavored things, but I agree that the Jell-O, pasta, and Pringles are taking it too far.
Seriously? Those poptarts are flipping delicious.
I thought the same thing when I first tried them last year. They’re delicious IN MODERATION. I found myself forcing myself to finish the box. They’re amazing, but more of a seasonal thing.
