The Last Presidential Debate Is Tonight: Why You Need To Be Involved

Presidential Debate Women's Rights

There’s a lot of talk over what issues are and aren’t super important in this presidential election–including the topics that have been hashed over in the first two presidential debates between President Barack Obama and his opponent, Mitt Romney. The third and final presidential debate is happening tonight (don’t forget to watch, ladies!) and it really could decide who wins this race, and has the power to make huge decisions that affect us all.

The issue that’s front and center on our minds (and we think it should be on yours, too!) is women’s rights. And by that, I mean: Our rights to earn a fair living and have the same opportunities as men, our rights to prevent or plan pregnancies in a smart and safe way, and our rights to have affordable and comprehensive health care options legally available.

If you’re one of the people who’s been commenting and saying that women’s rights aren’t as important as taking care of our economy, just know that promoting women in the workplace and ensuring that we can plan pregnancies around our careers will help the economy as a whole, and making sure that women get equal pay for equal work will help families be more financially secure so they can do things like send their kids to college (which also helps the economy!).

And if you don’t believe in abortion and think that’s the only thing that “women’s health” is about? Well, my first point is that nobody is forcing you to have an abortion. Don’t like them? Don’t have one. But beyond that, studies show that having affordable and reliable birth control available to women (this is something Obamacare will ensure we all have), dramatically reduces the numbers of women seeking abortions. I think it’s kind of a no-brainer, regardless of where you stand.

Still don’t get it? Watch this fun PSA (with a serious message) starring Girls creator Lena Dunham, actress Natasha Lyonne, and model Alexa Chung:

What do you think? Are you watching the debate tonight? Do you agree with the song, “You Don’t Own Me?” Are you standing up for women’s rights or do you think there are other issues that are more important to focus on? We want your opinion (even if you disagree!) Tell us in the comments!

For everyone who is saying this site is too liberal, I AGREE. Although I like some articles on this site, like the ones about gay rights and feminism (what it really should be about, not all this sexual revolution crap), most of them are just plain damaging to girls and women.
First of all, you normalize, if not glamorize teen sex. It’s one thing to occasionally talk about birth control and stuff, but abstinence is the best choice for teenagers. See, teen sex can not only lead to pregnancies and STDs, but it also has many emotional and social consequences. While condoms may prevent unwanted pregnancies and STDs, they do not prevent the emotional and social consequences.
And abortion… while I’m fine with birth control, abortion is a serious matter. I’m not completely against it (I think it should be legal in cases of rape or if the woman’s life is in danger), but let’s face it: you’re taking a life away.
Even if I was pro-choice, and even if I did support teenagers having sex, I would like it if you actually gave balanced information. Or at least, stop making it look like the article is unbiased when it is. This article is clearly biased. Maybe it’s not directly saying “vote for Obama,” but you can certainly read it in between the lines. Could you please show both sides?
Hate me all you want, but it will not change my opinions.

I think this site could really benefit from having some more conservative writers and articles. I like the more liberal view point because it make me think through my own view point, but sometimes I feel that the site is one sided.

You’re all pro-life until you’re the one that gets raped and has to have a baby that you don’t want. Honestly, would you really want to bring that man’s baby into this world? And I don’t think Gurl is trying to force their views on you. If you would follow the debates and interviews and all that jazz, you would know what all Romney plans. Now don’t go all crazy on me saying that I’m forcing My OPINION on you. I’m voting for Obama in 2 weeks because I don’t agree with anything that Romney wants to do.

All this site promotes is sex (really??? for teenagers?) and women’s rights/liberal views. Enough already! Not everyone agrees with you. I believe abortion is wrong and should be illegal, the same way I believe murder is wrong and should be illegal. That’s why I care, I see it as murder. You wouldn’t want to live in a society that said, “if you don’t like killing people, don’t do it” would you? That’s the same reason why many pro-life advocates want it illegalized. Other issues, such as gay marriage, I don’t agree with but it doesn’t hurt anybody else so I’m fine with it. Abortion? Not so much. It DOES hurt someone else. Besides, women’s righ are not the most important issue. Get over it.

See, I see many people say this but the thing is, even if abortion is made illegal, people will find another way to do it. It’s happened all throughout history – one of the most prominent examples being with prohibition. Alcohol was “illegalized”, yes, did people still get alcohol? Absolutely. The alternatives to sterile abortions in hospitals and abortion clinics are methods by hanger or perhaps falling down a flight of stairs, or dirty instruments, which will infect the mother and possibly kill her, too.

And women’s rights IS pretty close to the most important issue. Countries with better equality gender wise tend to have better economies. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have the fetus in my tubes which might cause them to burst, causing internal bleeding and killing me and the kid, and not have any way to stop that. How do you tell a woman, “Oh, sorry, you and your child will die and there’s nothing we can do about it.”

i’m very pro romney. Abortions are wrong. After a sermon at my church, I threw up. that’s how wrong it is.

Seriously,gurl.com-stop forcing your views on everyone! It’s getting old,and I don’t agree with any of your writers. You all act like stuck up losers and think that being a republican and being against abortion is a sin.Get a life and stop being so dramatic about politics and womens rights. This is not 1910 you know, women have just as many rights as men. What more do you want?

  7. avatarjkjkjk says:

Please remember girls that this post is not just saying, all women should get abortions, but is also stating that if we let someone else decide what is morally and ethically right, we also deny ourselves the right to make these decision ourselves. Physical and mental abuse has happened to many many girls and women, and it scares me that if something were to happen to me and I got pregnant I would have to have that child, but even worse I would have to go through the complications of pregnancy. Yes you could give the child up for adoption, but I would still have to go through a pregnancy, and be subject to other people judging me, thinking I’m a slut, and treating me differently. I know this is a heavy subject, but I would never wish that feeling on anyone, so because of that I’m pro-choice/anti abortion and I, like every women deserves this same choice.

You guys make it seem like you’re trying to help every girl understand the election, but you’re really being super biased and teaching people to agree with your views. Instead of convincing them that women’s rights is the most important part and all this stuff about abortion, why don’t you let us form our own decisions?
