I have a few favorite kinds of notes from you guys. I love the smart–and sometimes scathing!–criticism you give us when you think we got something wrong (it makes us work harder and tells us you guys really think about what we say); I love it when you guys respectfully disagree with each other while trying to figure out the other person’s point; and I really, really love it when you think something I wrote is funny. Me?! Funny?! Gosh.
But every once in a while, I’ll read a note that just makes me stop and fall in love with Gurl.com and our readers here all over again. This one came in today from “jkjkjk,” (and yes, I know jk means “just kidding,” but I don’t think this chica’s kidding about anything. Here’s what she said:
Okay, this doesn’t really have anything to do with this video, but I just want to THANK GURL.COM for being so amazing. I’m a teenage girl, and I live in a world dominated by gender roles and inequality, gurl.com has shown me that I don’t have to fall into any particular gender “role” in my life. I can grow up and be a scientist, because I AM smart enough to do that, or I could be a pro football player because I AM athletic enough. I don’t have to grow up and be a mother and clean the house all day, UNLESS I WANT TO!!!
You’ve taught me that I can have sex with a boy (or girl) I like and not be a slut! You’ve taught me to be healthy, by wearing condoms, putting myself before pleasing someone else, and respecting both my body and my limits. You’ve taught me that I can make mistakes, but that doesn’t mean I deserve to be bullied, nor should I be the bully. I know now that women are just as strong as men, and men just as strong as women. I know that feminism isn’t just about not shaving your legs, and hating men, but it’s a true way of life that resolves around trusting yourself, and believing that EVERYONE deserves fair treatment. I believe that all women are beautiful, and NO ONE deserves to be told otherwise. Thank you all so much, you gurls are my inspiration, and I proud to be a now and future feminist, and part of the gurl community.
OHMYGOODNESS! You get it! You’re listening! We’re doing our jobs right! Thank you (whatever your real name is!) for sending us such a totally rad note. And thank you for being the kind of strong, smart, kick ass girl who is going to change this world. We bet you’re probably doing it already.
Do you leave comments on Gurl usually? Why or why not? Do you think we could have a better system? Let us know what you think in the comments!
