Vice President Joe Biden goes head to head with Republican nominee Paul Ryan in the vice presidential debates tonight! | Source: WENN
You already know presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney pretty well–Obama is, well, our current P.O.T.U.S., and Romney’s no stranger to running for office. But how often do you get to get a good glimpse at our vice presidential nominees? Not too often, right? So tonight’s vice presidential debate is a big night for current VP Joe Biden and vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan. They’ll be covering both domestic (as in U.S. and things that happen in our own backyards) and foreign policy (like the scary wars we’re currently in). And frankly, we can’t wait to watch, because we think it’s going to be awesome. Why? Let us explain!
1. Joe Biden is freakin’ hilarious.
Joe Biden is sort of like everyone’s favorite uncle after one too many drinks on Thanksgiving. He’s got little to no filter, and that results in some pretty hysterical sound bites. Case in point: When President Obama signed his healthcare bill into law, Joe Biden was caught on camera muttering, “This is a big f—ing deal!”
2. Paul Ryan is pretty on the outside?
Politics is often referred to as Hollywood for ugly people, but Paul Ryan isn’t ugly . . . at least not on the outside! Let’s see what he has to say before we talk about his inner beauty. Or lack thereof.
3. Sarah Palin won’t be there.
Sarah Palin stole most of the spotlight from Joe Biden back in 2008, making for one of the most memorable SNL seasons ever, but diluting both her and Biden’s actual messages. Who will wink this time?!
4. We can learn if there’s a genuine “liberal media bias.”
The debate moderator, Martha Raddatz, has recently come under fire because she invited Barack Obama to her wedding over 10 years ago. It’ll be interesting to see if she shows any favoritism to either side–will she be easier on Joe Biden? Or will she overcompensate and be tougher on him?
5. Picking out the inaccuracies in the morning!
Paul Ryan got a ton of heat for his speech at the Republican National Convention, with even Fox News getting up his butt about the incorrect information he gave. We’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and just say he was sorely mistaken a lot and didn’t outright lie. Meanwhile, Joe Biden is pretty much regarded as goofy, bumbling, and almost a burden for the White House because of his often silly and occasionally wrong statements. We’re expecting long lists of corrections on Friday.
6. We may learn more about each candidates’ stance on reproductive health.
Though he’s changed his mind a few times, Mitt Romney’s most recent position is an anti-abortion, anti-healthcare for everybody policy–meaning he isn’t fond of abortion and wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, meaning we’d probably have to pay extra for birth control (even if we’re taking it for health reasons). Paul Ryan will likely speak on Romney’s behalf, and he co-authored the Sanctity of Human Life Act, which would seek to ban all abortion, even in cases of rape or incest. Joe Biden will support the Affordable Healthcare Act since he helped get it signed–and takes a pro-choice stance, as does President Obama. Neither President Obama nor Mitt Romney addressed women’s issues in their first debate, so we’re hoping the VPs will get to it!
7. Hopefully the vice-presidential candidates will speak on gay rights.
Mitt Romney doesn’t support gay marriage, but Barack Obama came out in favor of it earlier this year–and Joe Biden actually announced his support of gay marriage before the president did. It may be interesting to watch him go toe-to-toe with Paul Ryan on what exactly the definition of marriage is.
8. We’re looking forward to marveling at the hair products used to get the VP hopefuls’ coifs so perfect.
Paul Ryan’s jet-black gelled do versus Joe Biden’s breezy, receding white waves. It’s going to be a tough and close battle, but only one can prevail!
9. The zingers!
While presidential debates are usually super civil and almost friendly at times, a lot of times the vice presidential debates are a lot sassier and a lot saltier. Because the vice presidential reflects slightly less on the presidential candidates themselves, there will probably be a lot more brazen one-liners between the unfiltered Joe Biden and the well-versed Paul Ryan than between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney–although, did you catch the Donald Trump PENIS JOKE in the first debate? Good one, Mr. President!
10. If you plan on voting, it matters!
While a lot of people shrug off the vice presidential debates as no big deal, you need to remember that if anything scary should happen to the president, these are the men who might be running the country. You need to know where they stand on things that effect and that are important to you–because it may well change your life later!
