Why Does “Sassy Ursula” Have To Be “Skinny Ursula?”

Ursula from The Little Mermaid is one of our favorite Disney villains ever. She’s bawdy, she’s badass, she’s buxom–and owns it. So we were pretty stoked to learn that there’s an Ursula Halloween costume, but then immediately dismayed when we saw that it doesn’t come in plus sizes, nor does it look much like Ursula at all. Because, um, we’re pretty sure Ursula herself, had she lived “on the surface,” would have been a plus-sized broad.

The “Sassy Ursula” (it’s almost redundant–she’s so sassy that it need not be said!) costume comes with her trademark short, silver wig and a short dress with similarly short black tentacles over a poofy skirt. But the dress is so short that at first glance (and sometimes second or third), you can’t really tell that it’s an Ursula costume. To be fair, it may be in part because the model doesn’t have that pale blue-grey skin, blue eyeshadow, or red lipstick that Ursula did, but that’s neither here nor there.

Most Halloween costumes sold for women and girls are sort of annoying because they’re designed to be sexy, as opposed to creative, scary, clever, or funny the way a lot guys’ costumes are–which sort of implies that being “sexy” is mutually exclusive to everything else. It’s not. In fact, being creative, clever, and funny actually makes people a lot sexier. But that’s a whole other issue!

But what really makes this Ursula costume even more upsetting than most is that it’s a plus sized character and the costume doesn’t even come in a size that would let it fit a real, genuine Ursula (had that been possible). That’s right. It’s not available in plus sizes. It sends a really bizarre message: In order to be sexy or “sassy,” you need to be thin… Even if you’re pretending to be a thicker person. What the heck? It’s hard enough to find any Halloween costume that’s cute (or hilarious or horrifying, depending on your taste) when you don’t fit into a small size without paying through the nose for it. But the fact that a Halloween costume for a bigger character doesn’t fit bigger people is a little extra ridic–and not everyone has the artistic prowess or time to make her own.

We should note that there are other Ursula costumes out there if you do some digging: We found one on eBay that actually looks like Ursula, but will set you back about $80.00. Because obviously.

Do you have a hard time finding plus sized Halloween costumes? Do you think it’s dumb that there’s no actual plus sized “Sassy Ursula” Halloween costume? What are your Halloween costume ideas? Who’s your fave out of all the Disney villains? Tell us in the comments!

This isn’t the first time Ursula has been put on a diet.

Who needs sexy? I’m going in one of those full-body suits that cover every part of you in one solid color (plus hat, shades and tie)! I’d like to say I’m finished with storebought costumes. They make me sad.

I’m being a fairy. I like fairies and my “color guard family” are all being fairies. So I shall be a fairy. I just need the skirt and I’m good.

I’m pretty sure in the movie that Ursula was a skinny thing when she was on land.. just saying..

    • avatarKaela says:

because she was mimicking ARIEL.. that’s not the real Ursula. The Real ursula is an octopus..

Plus sized costumes cost more because they take more material. That’s why when I make a Formal dress for a size 2, its only $400, but when I make one for an 18 it’s more like $650. Extra work and extra material. It can get fraggling expensive to make stuff, not only buy it.

You think this is wrong just because they used a slim girl instead of a heavy one?

    • avatarKaela says:

I think the point was that they don’t supply the costume for both, for all shape of women.

    • avatarval says:

the fact it’s that she feels like they changed te heavy ursula into a slim ‘ursula’ because this society don’t accept well fat girls
