Some Directioners may have noticed poor Niall Horan of One Direction has been hobbling around on crutches lately. What happened? Did he fall (and not just in love with Demi Lovato)? Did he stumble during a dance party? Nope.

Turns out, Niall’s injury is the result of something much more sinister–and a bit nutty. 1D’s lone Irishman revealed in an interview with Capital FM that the booboo on his knee is the result of a squirrel attack. WTF?!

When he was asked about his football skills, Niall dropped a bomb–a hilarious, acorn-shaped bomb–on the world.

“A squirrel attacked me,” he said. “I got attacked by a squirrel in Battersea Park. They’re dangerous,” he said, adding, “It’s rare. I’ve torn most of the ligaments in my knee. So no football for me. It’s early retirement now. I’ve got a floating knee-cap!” (Keep in mind that Niall’s from the other side of the pond, where “football” is actually “soccer!”)

However, before you go out and hide all the nuts in your yard, know that Niall may well be joking around. He really does have a busted knee, but the squirrel attack may be just a more interesting story than what actually went down: a soccer injury. (Still, we would have used a different animal: It sounds a lot more macho and respectable to survive, say, a wrestling match with a bear or a shark bite.)

Poor Niall seems pretty accident prone, but at least he has a sense of humor about his mishaps. Not too long ago he had a major wardrobe malfunction when split his pants during a round of golf, and his bandmate Zayn Malik announced to the planet that Niall’s the gassiest member of One Direction! While we’re perfectly content not knowing who farts the most in 1D, it’s a safe bet that today Niall made us laugh the most. Get well soon! (Have Demi nurse you back to health!)
