Is your friend into bad stuff? Is she getting into things you’re not comfortable with–drinking, drugs, bullying, or just general shadiness–and trying to get you to go along with it all? Does she give you backhanded compliments or always use you for a ride, cash, your clothes? If a pal is being mean, passive aggressive, or pressuring you into stuff you know probably isn’t great for you, whether it’s skipping class, staying out past your curfew, or smoking weed at a party when you’d rather not, she may not reallybe a friend.

In fact, she sounds like a bad friend. And in that case, Demi Lovato thinks you should dump her!

If anyone knows about bad influences, it’s Demi Lovato. She went to rehab to deal with drugs, bulimia, and bi-polar disorder–and if she didn’t seek help for herself, she probably wouldn’t have been encouraged to do so by the people she hung around before she got better.

“Treatment was so difficult at first. I remember walking around saying ‘I’m in prison!’” Demi dished about her time in a treatment center. “They needed to have those strict rules in order for me to understand how sick I was. I wasn’t allowed to use the bathroom by myself. We had specific phone times. There are tons of things you weren’t allowed to have, you weren’t allowed to have certain hair products or whatever, that you could injure yourself with or possibly drink, and you were just stripped of a lot of things.”

Obviously, a bad friend isn’t necessarily responsible for anyone else’s behavior, but a bad friend will encourage negativity if it seems to benefit her. If Demz were in a better place mentally and emotionally, she may have realized sooner that the people around her are getting a lot more out of her friendship than she is–and friendship should never be one-sided!

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Demi revealed that post-rehab, she assessed a lot of the people around her and realized that she had a lot of bad friends–people using her for fame, money, or access to things that aren’t good for her.

“I did kind of a friend cleanse right after rehab, where I weeded out people who didn’t have my best interests at heart,” she said. “Now I have friends who love me for who I am and don’t care about what I’m doing … Some of them don’t even know my songs!” Amen, sister! But does anyone else think they’re lying about not knowing her songs? Everyone knows “Skyscraper” and “Give Your Heart a Break!”
