Stop Being So Obsessed With Nail Polish

nail polish obsession

You spent HOW long on this?! | Source: Shutterstock

Okay, so I’m not like, against nail polish or anything. It’s fun, and it can be an easy (and usually inexpensive) way to make yourself feel a little more awesome. What I’m here to gripe about today (and yes, I’m griping) is the fact that so many girls are totally obsessed with nail polish to the point where there’s really not that much else going on with them.

It’s one thing to get your nails done maybe once a month with girlfriends, or to spend your Sunday evening TV binge with a bottle of nail polish. It’s quite another thing to have a standing appointment at the salon (that’s expensive!) or to carry a bottle of polish around with you at all times “just in case.” I’ve actually even known girls who were super late to dinners or who said they “couldn’t come out” because their nails were a mess and they had to fix them first. What the hell?

I want to shake these girls for so many reasons. First, there are better things to spend your money on. Things like chocolate milk shakes, concert tickets, you name it. But more than that, there are way more important things to spend your time on!

My not-so-perfect nails!

My nails are a mess right now, and I love that. You want to know why? Because every time I look at them, I remember that a) I was in too much of a rush to get to my own birthday party (fun!) to do anything but swipe one stripe of glitter polish onto each nail and b) I’ve already messed them up from typing (awesome) and playing my ukulele (even more awesome).

If you have the time to totally obsess over nail polish and nail art, you’ve got way too much time on your hands (literally!). Try playing a sport, making real art (not just on your nails), playing an instrument, or offer to help your kid brother fix his bike. YES, your nails will get chipped, but you know what? You’ll also have fun or at least learn something new. You’ll become a more interesting person to hang out with, and someone who can add something cool to a conversation.

What do you think? Are you obsessed with nail polish? Do you ever feel a little prissy about it? Tell me in the comments!

    I understand your point.

Nail polish can distract some people from focusing on more life-pressing issues.

But look how upset you made all these women! haha

I do my nails on Sunday nights, at 11 o clock, right after I take a shower. It’s the only alone time I get, because all my other time is taken up by clubs, and instruments, and my siblings, and family.Nail polish is my mini-vacation.The time I spend only for me.You may not feel the same way, but I don’t do nail polish because I have all the leisure time in the world.I do them because nail art is a form of expressing yourself, and because that half-hour is the only me-time I get. xoxo

Don’t like this article one bit! yes, not turning up somewhere because your nails are a mess is a bit extreme, but the rest of what you’re saying is completely WRONG! You say that we should learn a musical instrument, play a sport or do some art… FINE, if you’re good at or interested in any of those things! believe it or not, there are some girls out there (like me) who have no artistic, sporting or musical ability at all! What makes art on a piece of paper so much more creative and theraputic than art on your nails?
And another thing, YOU may think that nail art is a waste of time and that it’s not a good hobby. Fair enough. But I personally have exactly the same views about pretty much all sports! Sports are for people who don’t have anything better to do with their lives! They are dangerous, tribal-like activities which promote bullying!

This article really frustrates me. What’s the big deal, that some girls have hobbies that might be considered frivolous to others? They aren’t hurting anybody, and they should be able to determine for themselves what the appropriate amount of time to devote to their nails are. This article accuses girls who spend time on what is just an innocent hobby of being “less interesting.”

    I LOVE NAIL POLISH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Although obssession may not be good but a lil bit of creativity is essential.

Why is nail art “bad”? I do nail art to express my creativity because nail art is something I’m really good at. Also if you get enough coats of top coat, nail polish will stay on for a while.

I agree, nails are just… nails. I put on a coat of color every once in a while, but 90% of the time there’s nothing there. Chances are, you are going to be doing things that will mess them up, so there’s no sense in worrying about it (FYI, doing your nails or ANY kind of makeup in traffic, even slow traffic, is dangerous). Of course there is nothing wrong with having your nails look nice, but it’s just not important enough to have to maintain all the time.

I admit I am OBSESSED with doing my nails, I already did them 3 times this week. But I also play 3 sports and I am a pretty good artist. So don’t hate on us nail polish junkies! ;)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting your nails to look nice and there’s nothing wrong with doing nail art. Ever think maybe that their way of expressing themselves? Just saying. I’d do it if I had the time.

Well I’m a guilty person that carries her nail polish around. I do that because I just don’t like to look at my hard worked on nails (which, I do them every Sunday…) and see them chipped.

It doesn’t freak me out or anything. Just when I have time on my hands like sitting in traffic, watching the news, etc, I quickly fix them up.

I don’t really go to a nail salon anymore and when I did, I always got acrylic nails. Now I’m going ‘au natural’. But I don’t really find myself obsessive, I really just want to grow out my nails (Im a biter) and nail polish keeps me from biting and keeping them maintained gives me a reason to want my nails to look nice!
