8 Video Game Cereals We’d Love To Eat For Breakfast

Who says video games are just for boys? Definitely not us! We love a good video game over here at Gurl.com… they’re fun, exciting and an awesome break from reality. While we love the games that are most popular today, old-school video games like Super Mario and Donkey Kong will always have a very special place in our hearts.

And what do we love almost as much as actually getting play those video games from our childhood? Um, getting to eat them! Sort of. Some of our fave old-school games inspired some seriously cool cereals – that’s how you knew a game was really good, obviously. Unfortunately these super awesome cereals aren’t around anymore. But that doesn’t mean we can’t reminisce about how much we’d love to eat them for breakfast. Check out eight of our fave video game cereals:

Nintendo System Cereal

Who didn’t love the old-school Nintendo game console? This box combined both Super Mario Bros. cereal and Zelda cereal – all fruity flavors, all crazy awesome. The box itself is too cool to throw out. I almost can’t blame people for spending hundreds of dollars on them on eBay. I mean, how much cooler would cereal be if it were still like this?

Donkey Kong Crunch

Donkey Kong Crunch
This 1981 cereal totally mimicked the game Donkey Kong. One of the main obstacles was getting past giant rolling barrels – and so the cereal was shaped like barrels. So cute!

Pac-Man Cereal

I always forget how long Pac-Man has been around, but the fact that this cereal was created in 1983 reminds me of that. It had pac-man shaped marshmallows, which were a bonus because you could play with your cereal as well as eat it. A kid’s dream.

The Real Ghostbusters Cereal

This is another oldie, made all the way back in 1985… just one year after the video game came out. It mixed fruit flavored cereal with ghost shaped marshmallows and the theme song included this line, “What you gonna crunch? (Ghostbusters!)”, so basically, it’s amazing.

Admit it – you nearly sprained your thumbs playing The Lost World on your GameBoy Color back in the day! In this cereal, the marshmallows were shaped like dinosaurs – who wouldn’t want to eat a dinosaur?! In case you couldn’t tell, marshmallow shaped anything made every cereal that much better.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cereal

Introduced in 1989, this was one of the coolest cereals around – because what was really cooler than the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? It’s basically Chex mixed with marshmallows, except the cereal that looked like Chex were supposed to be “ninja nets” and the marshmallows were shaped like ninja turtles. Yummy and entertaining!

Pokemon Cereal
Pokemon Cereal
This Kellogg’s cereal is the most recent one we have up here, but it’s still great. It was introduced in 2000 as a limited-edition cereal, and anyone who collected Pokemon cards, played Pokemon games and talked all things Pokemon had to have it. It’s like Lucky Charms, but the marshmallows are shaped like Pokemon characters – much more cute!

Donkey Kong Jr.Cereal
Donkey Kong Jr
Obviously Donkey Kong was so awesome that it required not one, but two cereals. Donkey Kong Jr. was introduced in 1983 and was made up of cereals shaped like fruits, specifically bananas and red berries. It was fruit that monkeys and gorillas like. Get it?! This may remind me a lot of Trix, but I still wish these were around.
What was your favorite old-school cereal from this list? What did I miss? Which of these video games did you like the most? Tell us in the comments!
