National Voter Registration Day

Today is National Voter Registration Day. We hope that all of you 18+ girls are planning on voting this coming election. Voting is a great privilege, so please don’t take it for granted. There are lots of countries where citizens don’t get to vote or women aren’t allowed. Take advantage of the opportunity to make the world come close to how you envision your utopia!

No matter what you believe in, this is how your voice can be heard. If you have strong beliefs on abortion, birth control, LGBT rights, universal health care, foreign policy, medicare, taxes, the economy or student loans, who wins this election will prove to be truly important. All of these things affect you as an individual.

Think of it this way, not voting is the same as voting except you have less of a say.

It’s OK if the prospect of voting feels overwhelming or like you don’t know enough about politics to have a strong opinion. Think about the things going on in your life and try to find one or two issues that are significant to you, and vote based on that.

If someone you know is seriously ill, then maybe vote based on which candidate has the best plan for healthcare. If you or a friend is bullied for being queer, vote for who is going to help make the country better for the LGBT community. If you believe life starts after conception vote based on that. It’s important to connect your experiences with the politicians who can best serve you.

There is no right or wrong answer. This is all about your values. Don’t even feel pressured to tell anyone who you’re planning to vote for.

This is a great website where answering a few questions determines which candidates align most with your beliefs and by what percent. You can check out my results here. I side most with Jill Stein, a female candidate running with the Green Party.

MTV’s Rock The Vote campaign has a super quick way to register to vote. (Click here.) Here is another great unbiased website that outlines each candidates stance on the issues. (Click here.)

Don’t let all the voices cloud your judgment. Vote because of the things that are important to YOU! So get out and vote this November, 6th!
