EFF Yeah! Comments Of The Week: Virginity!

Virginity is such a heavy, loaded topic. It means so much in our culture, yet as individuals it can mean so many different things. For some of us virginity is no big deal, for others it’s a source of self-respect and dignity, while some may want to wait for someone special or marriage, others are content with just getting it over with! There isn’t any right answer, we just encourage that everyone own their choices as their own (and practices safe sex!). Here are your thoughts, brutally honest as always, on virginity.

I’m 15 and don’t have a boyfriend but i just want to get being a virgin out of the way, because if i think of waiting till i find the ‘right one’ i’ll still be a virgin at 25 or something, i want to get it over and done with. i don’t really know why i want it like this, but i’m not just going to go and have sex with anybody, i just want to find someone that will be fine with me not knowing what im doing but i think thats more acceptable when youre younger than when youre in your 20′s. Am i the only one who feels like this or does anyone else think the same too?? its really bugging me & i feel kinda slutty for wanting to get it over with :s help!!

      Hi there Gingerbread!

There’s nothing wrong with being a virgin at 25! But I still get where you’re coming from. You say you’re not “just going to go and have sex with anybody”, which is a good way to think about it. Don’t go lose your virginity for the sake of losing your virginity. If you feel the time is right, do it with someone you love, trust, and feel comfortable with. And if anybody who you date is a nice person, they shouldn’t mind you being a virgin.

And a random statistic for you: By the time they finish high school, roughly half of people have lost their virginity. The other half hasn’t become sexually active yet, though you wouldn’t know it being a high schooler.

I know there is pressure around virginity both from people telling you to wait until marriage and from people telling you it’s no big deal and you should go lose it ASAP. But you don’t need to listen to what anybody else is saying about it. Your virginity is your business and yours alone. I know society is super-obsessed with virginity (ahem. meaning female virginity, that is). When you go to college, there will be people who will give you weird looks when you tell them you’re still a virgin, I won’t lie to you about this. But there will also be the people who think it’s weird not to wait until marriage.

Don’t let societal pressures make up your mind for you.

And you’re only fifteen! Don’t fret about your virginity. Just go out and enjoy life and being a teenager!
