All of the editors here at Gurl are strong, empowered women…who sometimes sleep with the lights on after watching a scary movie. Seriously, we’re babies when it comes to horror flicks, but that doesn’t mean we don’t ever watch them. We just each have a stockpile of nightlights. No big deal! Here are our favorite scary movies.
Melanie: The Hunger
I don’t watch a lot of scary movies (I get the WORST nightmares), but I do love The Hunger, which stars David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. If you haven’t seen this one, it’s pretty creepy. David Bowie is maybe the sexiest vampire ever. (No worries, R-Patz, you are a close second!) And the opening scene starring Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy is super iconic. A couple of years ago, NARS released a nail polish called “The Hunger” for the movie’s anniversary . . . and guess what color it was? Blood red!

Emerald: Chucky
According to my mom, my first full sentence was, “Mommy, the dolly killed the lady.” I have no idea why she would let an 18-month-old watch a horror movie about a serial killer toy, but let’s just say it hit close to home. I had a doll, a “My Buddy” doll to be exact, that looked EXACTLY like Chucky. I was sure this doll was going to murder me in my sleep for years. It’s only my favorite now because I am old enough to watch it and realize it’s more funny than scary. Besides, I am 100% sure Woody and Buzz Lightyear would kick Chucky’s butt before he had a chance to kill me in my sleep.

Jessica: The Shining
I actually really hate scary movies because I get so terrified I can’t sleep for days, but for some reason I’m really into The Shining. If you’ve never seen this classic horror movie, rent it – now. Or preferably on a day when you’re snowed in, so that it’s extra creepy. I watched this on Halloween one year and was instantly hooked. The movie is just so creepy and weird that it’s hard to look away. Plus, the hotel in the film reminds me of a hotel I’ve been going to with my family for years, so that makes watching this even more fun. I’ve seen this a million times – mainly because I love how insane Jack Nicholson is in it. Seriously, even if you hate scary movies like I do, I’m pretty sure you’ll like this one.

Julie: Scream
The first scary movie I saw in the theatre was Scream and it scared the bah-jesus out of me. My best friend Leila and I walked out of the theatre literally shaking. We were in shock, both from the movie and from our moms actually letting us go. Scream is about this terrible murder spree in a small town and the first scene might be the most frightening. Drew Barrymore starts making popcorn and then, well, don’t want to spoil it for anyone, so I’ll only tell you that some very bad things happen to her. Let’s just say I’ve never made popcorn home alone and never will.
Did you favorite make the list? If not, share it in the comments. Also, a new super scary movie, The Possession, is out in theatres Friday. Definitely nightlight material!
