It’s back to school already! I’m sure you’ve said it to yourself the same way just about everyone does, “This year is going to be different!” It’s hard to completely shake things up, but it’s totally possible. Having a great school year doesn’t require changing yourself, just a different approach to those infamous school hallways. The most important thing is to have a meaningful time! That includes friends, school work, and maybe the occasional extra curricular. Here are 10 tiny pieces of advice that will help you get through the school year–unscathed!
Be YOU
Your personal style is worth a lot more than you think. Don’t freak out because no one else at school has pink hair or likes Bluegrass music. You may not have stuff in common on the outside, but that doesn’t mean people won’t ADORE you for all your quirks, interests and offbeat style. ShutterStock.comHooking Up And Dating Is Fun, But . . .
It ain’t everything. Some years you’ll be dating a bunch, some you’ll have your one and only, and some you won’t date at all. Go with the flow. Feeling weird about not having a BF or GF is just a waste of time, there are so many better things you could be doing—like enjoying that really fun party you were invited to! ShutterStock.comThe New Girl
If you’re the new girl it’s OK if you don’t have a billion friends the first week or the first month. Building bonds takes time. Everyone is shy, not just you! ShutterStock.comClique Drama
The real world isn’t divided by cliques. It’s useless to get mad about (though we totally get why it can be upsetting) The truth is none of it is going to matter in a few years. Finding a few good people who really care about you is what's most important. ShutterStock.comThe Summer Fling Is Over
But that doesn't mean it wasn't for real. You're not disposable and no one else is. You had fun and made a connection. Cherish the memory and move onto all the new amazing things you're going to do. ShutterStock.comPeer Pressure
It's totally lame. Everyone knows that but when it comes time to make those tough decisions it isn't easy. You’re already cool, doing something you don’t want to do isn’t going to make you seem cooler. No one is dying to be friends with the pushover, right? Don’t be afraid to say, “no” and “yes” when you want to. ShutterStock.comThere's Grades, Then There's Memories
Doing your best IS good enough. Stretching yourself too thin for a grade at the expense of your happiness is silly. Making good friends and having fun is just as much a part of school as learning. ShutterStock.comYour Back To School Wardrobe
No new clothes? No one is going to notice. There is always a pre-back to school panic because everyone is expected to have a brand new wardrobe. Guess what? Not everyone’s parents can afford to shell out the big bucks when your old clothes are just as good. Last school year was so long ago, no one knows that your fierce fall skirt was also your fierce summer skirt. ShutterStock.comPlay Nice
Be kind to your peers. When everyone is making fun of someone it’s easy to join in and laugh. We all know how hurtful bullying is because we have seen the results. This doesn’t mean you have to befriend anyone you don’t want to, but you don't have to be anyone's enemy either. ShutterStock.comSometimes . . . It Will Suck
Sometimes even your BFF won’t be able to give you the support you need. You have to remember nothing is permanent. Any crappy feelings you have will eventually go away. If you feel totally alone, remember you have a guidance counselor—yeah, they may seem kind of lame, but they can actually help you.
