The author clearly states an exception for people with intentions to go to grad school, so I’m not sure why the other people commenting are acting as if she did not.

As someone who DID go to grad school, I will still say 7 years out of college and I wouldn’t trade my wonderful and crazy memories with my friends for a few more A’s on my transcript any day of the week. It’s all about balance!

Ha yes that was kind of my point! I always knew writing was for me so I should’ve focused on courses specific to that. But OBVS the opposite would have been true if I’d been a doctor or scientist.

Completely disagree with this! No offense, but Liberal Arts majors shouldn’t really even need college! Science majors really really really do need good grades to get into graduate programs and med/vet school. We don’t have time to slack off and play around, we are taking classes that will be applicable to our daily lives once we get that PhD/MD/DVM. These graduate schools are basically impossible to get into UNLESS you have a top of the percentage GPA and a million applicable volunteer/work hours. I am very jealous though of how little work LA majors have to put into their college careers though! Although in the end, who ends up being the doctor and who ends up working in a cubicle?

And to add, why slack?! No, you shouldn’t stress yourself out so much that you hurt yourself, but why wouldn’t you try your best? I would beat myself up and be more stressed if I DID slack off. I want to try to be the best I can be, doesn’t have to be an A, but I’m not just going to say “whatever.”

Yeah, the reason why no one cared about your degree as much is because you’re a writer. Not saying that’s a bad profession, you can just be a great writer naturally so your grades don’t matter as much. Now if you were in medicine, science, math, etc. they would care about your grades (and they should).

I totally agree– nobody wants a mediocre, slacker doctor. Those students studying to be a doctor or any other professional, should be aiming for the best possible performance in anything they do. Slacking of as the writer of this article suggests above will only stunt anyone’s chances of becoming great in highly competitive professions.

That’s not always true, in my case I want to take an honours program so I can get my PhD, in order to do so I have to get good grades in ALL my university courses not just the important ones, because they don’t only look at my GPA but also the individual courses when I apply to enter the honours program, and once in it if I get a low grade in a class I could be put on academic probation, so you shouldn’t really give advice like that to impressionable young people with out also mentioning the fact that if you want to be a scientist or a doctor or a lawyer or an engineer, your grades do matter, ALL of them.
