When I was a kid I was pretty obsessed with sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. I was obsessed with reading Goosebumps books and wrote a ton of short horror stories, so practically any TV show with supernatural creatures, magical forces, or spooky story lines was going to be a huge favorite of mine. The Vampire Diaries and True Blood are great, but they say your first love is the strongest, and well–these ’90s shows were my first love.
These series were kooky, eccentric, and funny–even the ones that were a little scary. Do you remember any of these?
The Secret World of Alex Mack
The story of a girl who gets powers after an accident with some toxic waste and is forever escaping the plot of an evil corporation. (Bonus: When she ate rice and beans she got super strength. Most of us just get gas.)
Sabrina The Teenage Witch
Who can forget Sabrina? Flying around on a vacuum, the ability to zap into a new outfit, and a talking cat are just a few of the reasons I was completely envious of her powers.
So Weird
This was my favorite show. Fiona traveled around the country on a tour bus, solving supernatural mysteries, and blogging about it on her laptop. Dream job.
Young Hercules
Yes, that is Ryan Gosling as demi-god Hercules. Yes, this is how I will always, always remember him.
Goosebumps
I adored the “Reader Beware, You Choose The Scare” series, so when Goosebumps was turned into a Saturday morning series, I watched every single episode.
Eerie, Indiana
This show was really weird. It was like The Adventures of Pete and Pete meets So Weird . . . meets even more weirdness.
Are You Afraid Of The Dark?
Are You Afraid Of The Dark? always freaked me out. Certainly not enough to stop my brother and me from telling scary stories to each other at night. We called our yarn spinning, “The Midnight Window” because we told stories by my bedroom window. We were dorks, you’re right.
Teen Angel
Marty dies after eating a six-month-old cheeseburger from under his BFF Steve’s bed–then comes back as his guardian angel.
You Wish
A 2,000-year-old genie moves in with a family to shake things up. I barely remember this one myself, but I know that I totally watched this after Sabrina.
Charmed
The Power of 3 will set you free. Three witch-sisters with unique powers, battle demons and make sassy comments.
Buffy
The teenage cheerleader turned vampire hunter is a legend now. And rightfully so. Scooby Squad forever!
Angel
This spin-off (starring a vampire with a soul who ran a supernatural detective agency) won the hearts of Buffy fans who couldn’t get their full fix.
What was your favorite supernatural ’90s show? Let us know in the comments!
