Under that catchy tune and fancyboy vocal perfection are the actual lyrics. “You don’t know you’re beautiful. And that’s what makes you beautiful.” What? Like seriously, WHAT? Not knowing you’re beautiful makes you beautiful. Let me say it again, WHAT?
Not thinking you’re beautiful is certainly not what makes you beautiful. Confidence is what makes you beautiful. And not just that. Confidence can make you sexy. Confidence can make you interesting. Confidence can make you all around awesome. And here’s what doesn’t: walking around thinking you’re not worthy of someone else’s love, praise, or mop topped musical love notes.

I’m sick of all the weird messages we get about how being shy, insecure and quiet makes you more desirable. It’s not just this song. It happens in The Little Mermaid, every episode of The Bachelor, and Twilight. Girls, I’m here to tell you, insecurity being sexy just isn’t true. No real life dude (including Harry Styles) has ever said, “I want an insecure girl who thinks she’s ugly and needs me to constantly reassure her that she’s pretty.” And on top of that, no one hiring for a job has ever said, “I’m looking to hire someone who doesn’t know her worth and can’t tell me why she’s the right hire for this position.” And no girl has ever said, “You know what I want in a best friend? Someone who feels terrible about herself and doubts her abilities all the time.” You’re more valuable and desirable to everyone when you believe in yourself and feel as fantastic as you actually are.
I’m not saying you can’t be vulnerable with people that are close to you or you need to turn into some sort of Tyra Banks-like egomaniac. Of course you can have weaknesses. Those are just as much a part of your personality as anything else. What I’m saying is that being confident is sexy and beautiful!
I’m not going to stop listening to One Direction. (My life would take a dramatic shift for the worse if I did that.) I’m just going to take that song for what it is–awesome, upbeat getting ready music–and leave the rest of it. And I hope you do too. Know that you’re beautiful, smart, sexy and strong. And THAT’s what makes you beautiful. And One Direction, I can’t stay mad at you for long. Tapered pants, winks and hair product. That’s what makes you guys beautiful.

1) They have said so themselves! The song is about that one girl that doesnt know shes beautiful and they’re just trying to prove that she really is beautiful!

3) The writers mean the lyrics metaphorically; what the mean is that the fact that the girl is down to earth and not bragging about her appearance and her image as a person make her beautiful

I don’t think you should be hating on One Direction about the song. Hate on the people who wrote the song (Rami Yacoub, Carl Falk and Savan Kotecha). One Direction actually didn’t write most the songs on their Up All Night album.
Ha, I thought the exact same thing the first time I listened to it! I get what you’re saying. But to be honest, the majority of girls don’t look at themselves as beautiful. They look at themselves as pretty, and average-looking. You know, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”? I think they were meaning that they find “her” so beautiful that they’re head over heels, and she’s oblivious to all of the attention because she doesn’t see what they see. But, that’s just me!
I don’t think that’s quite what they intended. I think it’s more like “you’re beautiful because you’re not an egomaniac”.
I think one direction is saying like your walking around and not thinking your beatiful but you really are like your not knowing your beatifull i love 1d im not talkin bad about THEIR lyrics cause MAYBE you just dont UNDERSTAND them
