I’m Not Showering – Don’t Call Me Gross

Shower Everyday

Do you shower once a day? | Source: ShutterStock

Okay, before you get completely grossed out by the title of this post, let me assure you that I do shower on a regular basis. I don’t (think) I smell, my hair is always clean and I have lots of fun, yummy-smelling bath products that get put to very good use.

I’m talking about a conversation I’ve had countless times with guys. Most guys I know, including my boyfriend and my brother, wake up and shower every single morning. They roll out of bed in the AM, go into the shower and come out 20 minutes later; ready to conquer the day, smelling good and looking clean. But I don’t shower everyday – and for some reason, guys just don’t get it. Then we have this convo:

Boyfriend/brother/dude: “Aren’t you going to shower?”

Me: “Nah.”

BF/bro/dude: “But… that’s gross.”

Me: “I just showered yesterday.

BF/bro/dude: “So what? It’s still gross.”

I know I’m not the only one who’s had this conversation before, and honestly, I’m so sick of defending myself! It is not gross to skip a shower once in a while. If I showered the afternoon or night before, and did pretty much nothing all night, I’m not going to wake up in the morning and wash myself. I mean, yeah, if I just worked out or felt super sweaty, I’d definitely jump in the shower. But if I spent the night watching movies in my PJs, what’s the big deal about showering later on or the next day?

Here’s the thing: dudes can hop in and out of the shower in a few minutes. Most of them have very little hair to wash, half of them don’t even understand what conditioner does (or maybe that’s just my BF) and they don’t have to shave their legs or armpits. Once they’re out of the shower, they’re pretty much good to go – they just have to throw on some clothes and they can walk out the door.

For me, it’s not that simple. Maybe there are some girls who shower quickly and were lucky enough to be born with hair that dries neatly on it’s own. But I am so not one of those girls, and neither are a lot of ladies I know.

Shower Everyday

This stuff takes time! | Source: ShutterStock

My showers are a process. I have a lot more hair than the majority of the guys I know – meaning that shampooing and conditioning (and maybe deep conditioning, if necessary) takes longer than five minutes. I have to shave in there, and guys, I don’t know if you’ve ever tried standing on one foot on a slippery surface while holding a razor, but let me tell you: it’s not fun.

Once I’m out of there, I then have to worry about my hair and makeup. Sure, some days I jump out of the shower, put my hair in a wet ponytail, forgo makeup and call it a day. But most days, it’s not that easy. I have to blow out of my hair, then straighten or curl it. I have to apply all of my makeup. I have to moisturize and primp and all that good stuff. And then I still need time to pick out what I’m going to wear.

So, no, I don’t shower every morning. Sometimes I do all of it right before I go to sleep, so I can wake up a little later and start my day right away. Sometimes I’m just too lazy to do my hair when it looks fine as it is… besides, it’s not even healthy for your hair to wash it every day. And sometimes, I wash my body off without getting my head wet.

My point is, stop calling me gross for not showering every morning like you. Unless, of course, you want to start complaining about how long I take to get ready.

Do you shower every day? Do guys ever call you gross for not showering? Can you totally relate with my problem? Or do you shower all the time? Let me know in the comments!

I can totally relate with you. I don’t shower every day. And I do all of the stuff that you do when you have to shower and get ready for the day. It’s a lot of work. And it’s ridiculous when someone says it’s gross when you tell them that you don’t shower every day. I have friends that do and they look at me when I tell them I don’t shower the next day. But then again, I know people that don’t shower every day, so don’t feel bad. Just take care of your hair they way you already do! :D

with hair as thick, dry, and frizzy as mine, i literally have to wake up an HOUR earlier, use 4 times as much antifrizz cream than any sane person, and can’t even blow dry it. soooooo needless to say, unless i feel really motivated, i shower at night, every other day. lol.

my little brother does the same thing! and i totally agree with you! :) it is not good for your skin at all to always wash it. nice to know that i am not alone. :)

  5. avatarDiana says:

    I agree lol.
Taking a shower everyday and having to do your hair and all is just some hard work. Ive never had a guy telling me its gross cause Ive never had that conversation before.

I 100% agree that you do not need to shower every day! I mean, I think it’s different if you’re in school still and are participating in gym class or in a sport or whatever — then I can see why you would NEED a shower every day. But as an adult, it becomes not as necessary. The morning after a day that I have NOT worked out, I totally don’t shower. My hair always looks better those days anyways, so why would I mess with that? It’s the difference between taking 30 mins to get ready vs. 1 hr 30 mins. 2 hours if I really want to take my time with lotions and styling my hair (God forbid) and all that extra crap. That’s either a lot of extra time for sleep or time for breakfast or time to read before work. I like all those things better than standing in front of the mirror for an hour.
Also, if my hair is feeling a little less than clean, but I don’t have time for a shower, I LOVE to use a leave-in aerosol spray shampoo. It is amazing and takes any oily or slightly greasy look out of your hair immediately!

I totally agree with her, plus it takes me a while to get ready and I also have to shave because when I shave my legs then like 3 days later my hair will grow back and be the same length as it was before I shaved so then that slows me down and I have alot of hair and it takes almost an HOUR to flat iron

I shower before I go to bed usually because most of the time if I let my hair air dry during the day it gets supper frizzy (somehow letting it air dry throughout the night makes it calm and anytime myself or a pro has tried blow drying my hair it looks and feels horrible). It doesn’t mean I didn’t shower I just showered at night!

A trick I use if I don’t want to shampoo and condition/wet my hair (I wash my hair every other day and sometimes wet in in between), I’ll wrap a towel around my hair and shower like that.

I hope you wash your face when you don’t shower! Also it would probably also be a good idea to wet your vajayjay and armpits. On a side note, the way you and your bf are is the opposite with me and my bf, but he looks dirty which is why I get grossed out & he will go DAYS without showering.

I can totally relate to the last quote in the article!!!

(“My point is, stop calling me gross for not showering every morning like you. Unless, of course, you want to start complaining about how long I take to get ready.”)

I am the exact same way. All of my friends also. I hate washing my hair because it gets all puffy looking. My hair always looks better the next two days after washing it. So I usually just wash it twice a week but I do shower between washes. It still smells, feels, and looks great. So thankful my hair can keep a curl and stay straightened for days. My dad just doesn’t get this though. He calls me and my mom gross. So irritating. Boyfriend doesn’t know though. He doesn’t need to know every step in my beauty routine. He just knows it takes time.

Also men just naturally tend to smell more. Their b.o. is stronger and they sweat more than we do. So makes sense why they shower daily.

  12. avatarCindy says:

that’s what i tell my mom! but she will be just like every 5 minutes yelling me to go get some bath. and sight! dudes take 20 minutes? my mom and dad always complain of the time I take to shower, and that’s just like 10-15 minutes. that’s also one of the reason I had a time when I wished I was a boy instead. they don’t even have to shave and can look nice in everything,at least the majority of them that are damn good looking.

  13. avatarAssata says:

I find nothing wrong with this!! :) some girls do it and some don’t ! personally, i shower everyday and night sometimes, and other days, i just .. DONT ! there’s nothing wrong with showering right before bed or something ! some people just don,t get it :/

  14. avatarReign says:

During school year i shower every day at night or every 2 days in the morning just depending on wat i want. Summer if im going somewhere i shower if not idgaf

  15. avatarSweettreat says:

The truth is, unless you are some major athlete and sweat a lot, it will take a lot for you to actually become gross in the sense where you itch and actually smell. A study actually showed that people who shower very frequently are more likely to get sick or suffer more because of an infection, since they are always washing everything off themselves and their body cannot handle too much bacteria as a result.
Personally, I have curly hair and my routine every morning is to flip my head under the running water in my sink, and get it wet and then put hair serum through it. I rinse out excess product this way and can go about 3 days without having to use shampoo and conditioner. I know that if I washed my hair every single day I would lose the natural oils and my curls would be insanely unattractive!
Also, I’m one of those people who dances, sings, thinks a lot etc. in the shower, so if I shower before school, I would be late for sure :)

  16. avatarlane_xoxo says:

i have the same exact issue. people need to realize that not everybody needs to shower every day!

  17. avatarSmallfrye98ga says:

I don’t shower everyday. It’s not that bad. I mean if you use deoderant, & change your underwear (daily of course) Your ok for a day or 2… I wash up. Which means I take a towel, some soad and water, & wash under my arms, & other ‘places’. So, you can still have good hygiene & not shower everyday/night.

  18. avatarAlliKratt says:

Oh god, do I know how you feel. What people need to realize is that although many people have access to showers, not EVERYONE has to shower every day! It’s kind of an obvious fact!!!

  19. avatarCallie says:

i completely agree, plus, my hair takes longer to dry, and it’s curly… i prefer doing it at night b/c it’ll dry before i need to get it ready… my hair takes hours to dry.. and it’s alot harder to wake up earlier than to go to bed later… i like my sleep, and i’m a night person… i’ll shower if i’m gonna go somewhere or if i feel gross, but otherwise there is no reason to shower so much.. i actually was JUST arguing w/ my dad about this…

  20. avatarsydneyohhh says:

Personally, I feel dirty if I don’t shower. My hair and skin gets oily quickly and taking a shower makes me feel refreshed. I don’t do my hair or put on makeup if I’m just running errands or staying at home, but even then, I like feeling clean. I’m not saying that you’re dirty if you don’t shower daily, as long as you keep up with your hygiene (apply deodorant, brush your teeth, etc).
