You–yes, you!–might have sex at college before you even enroll!

A new survey reports that about 17 percent of teens have sex at college visits when they stay overnight to check out the campus. That’s almost one in five! And get this: For a lot of teens who have sex at college visits, it’s actually their first time. That said, it’s important to note that it’s unclear if the sex at college visits that students reported was necessarily intercourse or other sexy times stuff–like oral sex or other sexual contact.

It’s normal to experiment and discover your sexual identity in college, so hooking up on a college visit may just be an extension of that. It may also be related to lower inhibitions, since a lot of drinking was reported to go down at college visits, too. Still, if peer pressure is at play, it can make you likely to make decisions you might not otherwise go along with–like boozing or having sex at college parties before you’re even living in the dorms.

What can you do if you think you’ll be pressured into making a decision you might regret? You can make arrangements to stay overnight at an off-campus hotel instead of staying in a dorm overnight (where you’ll be around parties and peers who may encourage you to get tipsy–and naked). Also be sure to decide before you go what you’re comfortable with and what you plan on doing. You’re a lot more likely to stick to your guns if you load ‘em in advance.

And if you plan on having sex at college visits–hey, it’s not necessarily a bad thing if you’re careful–please do be responsible and pack condoms! Also, if you’re going to have sex at college visits, be careful about who you’re hooking up with: If one of you is a minor, depending on where the college is, there could be legal ramifications involved if you get caught. And that’s pretty scary, shady stuff.
