We know it all too well: the female body. It’s ridiculous enough having to deal with boobs, periods, and armpit hair. The media, with its female body obsession, makes inhabiting these bodies even more difficult. We can’t imagine what it’s like when you’re actually in the public spotlight. Constantly being criticized for your appearance is tough, but there a few Hollywood starlets who are able to stand up to the mainstream media and kick some ass for body image.
We picked five awesome girls who are fighting the good fight. Each has made a stance, spoken out, and did what they felt was right—in completely different ways. Whether they bared it in the buff or showed nothing at all, they each empower women by making how they use their bodies their choice. Here are five steps in the right direction.

Every girl has her limits, even the oh-so down to earth Emma Stone. When the funny girl gets asked if she’d ever do anything super racy or nekkid on camera, she normally laughs the questions off. But she made her point clear when she spoke to The Daily Mail, “My dad would kill me if I posed naked. He wouldn’t speak to me again and I really love my dad.”

Demi has some struggles with her weight and with Hollywood’s pressure to be thin. We give her major props for being open about living with an eating disorder. Instead of crumbling under media pressure when they reported that she had suddenly gotten “fat.” Demi took to Twitter with a comeback, “I’ve gained weight. Get over it. That’s what happens when you get out of treatment for AN EATING DISORDER.” That’s right. Get over it.
Megan loves controversy and we (quite guiltily) love to watch her because of it. The media might be hasty to dismiss Miss Fox as mere eye candy, but the girl is quick to set the record straight: She knows what she is doing. She owns it. She has her boundaries. Megan told The Times London about being labeled a sex symbol, “That’s not really a bad thing. If people want to look at me like that I find it flattering. And it gives me an advantage because people don’t expect anything from me.” She later told Entertainment Tonight, “You can be sexy and intelligent and be taken seriously.” There’s nothing better than a girl who can play up her striking looks with a tinge of self-awareness.
We all know and love Brit-Brit. We’ve watched her grow up from a 16-year-old girl (not yet a woman) to a 30-year-old mom. It’s no secret that her body changed after having two kids and getting a bit older. Bodies are supposed to do that kind of thing, duh. Nevertheless, there are still some folks in Hollywood who insist on comparing teenage Brit to woman Brit while insinuating she should still have the body of an underage girl. Too bad, Britney don’t want to hear that! Our girl allowed “before and after Photoshop” pics of her Candies photo shoot to be leaked. The side-by-side photographs revealed, not only what she actually looks like, but what airbrushing can do: smaller waist, poreless skin, and cellulite removal.
Whether you know Helen or not–you should. She is right up there with Meryl Streep as far as fierce “older” broads who can portray anyone go. What we love about Helen is that even at 66 years old, she is totally comfortable with her body and appears nude on screen all the time. Just two years ago she bared it all for New York Magazine proving beauty and sexuality don’t fade with age. She told New York about dynamic girls who like to get down, ““I’m thrilled young girls are claiming their sexuality for themselves. I love bold women: Madonna and Scarlett Johansson—sexy and gorgeous, but not only that. And Miley Cyrus—fantastic!”
We totally heart these women and how they stand up for themselves and healthy body image. This post written in partnership with The Amazing Spider-Man, in theatres on July 3rd.
