Where I come from (glorious, magical California), sleep-away camp isn’t super popular, and if you do go, it’s only for a week or two, not the whole summer. But whether you’re getting out of parental control for 7 days or 70, the first day at camp is pretty much the same for everyone…as are the lies we tell. Do any of these sound familiar?
Saying Goodbye to the Parents
She said: Mommmm—don’t hug me in front of everyone please. I don’t need to be know as “that wussy mama’s girl” from day one OK?
She meant: OH MY GOD PLEASE DON’T GO I MISS YOU ALREADY WHY DID I DO THIS?!
Meeting Your Cabinmates
She said: Hey, I’m Bethanny. But, um, my friends back home call me….Bella.
She meant: Mwahaha! At last, the chance to reinvent myself! Hey, a few weeks is better than nothing!
Unpacking
She said: Oh this J-14? Ha ha mom must have put that in at the last minute. She, like, totally think I’m some teenybopper. Which I’m NOT.
She meant: I’m just obsessed with Justin. And Niall. And Zayn, Selena, Taylor and everyone else in here. But I can stop reading it whenever I want to!
When Someone Asks if you Have a BF
She said: Oh…pfft duh. Lots of boyfriends. Like, multiple. His name? G…eorge. George Glass.
She meant: Please God no one try to verify this on Facebook or I’m going to have to leave camp and fake my own death!
Talking to the Boys
She said: What am I into back home? Oh ya know just…being the captain of cheer and like, editing the yearbook and starring in the spring musical and stuff. Not much. How about you?
She meant: I do none of those things.
Sneaking Out of the Cabin at Night
She said: You guys, cover for me. I’m gonna see if I can sneak into Luke’s cabin! Oooo!
She meant: I’m actually scuttling to the camp director’s office so I can call my mom. I’M SO HOMESICK PLEASE COME GET ME!
