I feel so bad for you! Everyone thinks you’re gorgeous, how terrible. Wait no, everyone thinks you’re the “sexiest woman alive” that must be devastating–not! It would be one thing if Scarlett’s looks limited her career options, but they have not. She has played everything from goths, to nerds, to superheroes. She has won prestigious awards and is constantly praised for her talents and abilities. Yes, people say she is a total babe too.
It’s so annoying when “pretty girls” complain about being pretty as if somehow the implication that they look good means they’re dumb or just a trophy. Do smart girls assume that they’re not “pretty” because they’re smart? Well, this smart girl doesn’t!
Maybe people would stop associating beauty with stupidity if the women we label as exceptionally beautiful didn’t complain about it as if it were a negative term. Yes, women are constantly under scrutiny for their looks. Yes, it would be nice if how we looked weren’t always used as a scale to measure our value. However, relax, a compliment is still a compliment.
Is it so wrong that when we think of ScarJo we think about her talents AND her looks? It’s not as though looks aren’t important to her (they are important to everyone) she looks stunning in just about every picture. It wouldn’t be presumptuous to guess that she wants to look good on the red carpet. I mean, who wouldn’t? All we are saying is, “You do look good, girl.” But no, no, no: beautiful girls are dumb, so people must think I am dumb.
Not the most forward thinking. If feminism teaches us anything it’s that women can look any way they want and be anything they want. If women can’t think beyond “hot girl” stereotypes then we’ll never get passed other absurd stereotypes like: ugly girls are smart to compensate for not being beautiful.
ScarJo, if we can accept that you’ve got the “boobs” and the “brains”, I think you can too.
Do you think pretty girls get accused of being dumb? Let us know in the comments!

She never said she didn’t like being PRETTY, she said she didn’t like being SEXY. I for one hate being considered sexy. I’d much rather be “cute”, but unfortunately, my figure doesn’t allow that. When I try and wear more girlish looking clothes, I usually look freaky and get hit on by creepy old dudes. It really sucks, and I totally get what Scarlett means. She said that she didn’t want to be a sex symbol, not that she didn’t want to be attractive! How much more obvious can you get?!
Maybe she truly does hate being sexy, did you ever consider that? and never once in this article did she claim that sexy or pretty girls are labelled as ‘dumb’ or ‘stupid’. I think gURL is jumping to conclusions in this case.
I actually totally agree with Scarlett. If it’s not what she was aiming for or wants, then of course it’s gonna bug her! Maybe i’m just prejudiced…i was nicknamed the hottest freshman at my school and although i had a lot of guy friends, most of them couldn’t carry a convo without flirting excessively. At first i just grinned and bore it, but after a while, it really got on my nerves. Sure, it’s flattering but it also makes you uncomfortable. People see you for your body, not who you are. So yeah, i can totally relate Scarlett, it sucks!!
I’m not sure that’s really where she was going with it. I mean, sure, she might not have had to say it. A simple “Thanks, all,” would have sufficed, but what I think she really meant was that she wanted to be known for her talents, characters, and exceptional acting more so than her looks. But most, not all, people tend to think “ScarJo is such a hottie,” like Megan Fox, and I think she was just trying to say that she doesn’t need to be labelled as all this stuff, she just wants to act. I could be wrong, but I don’t think she deserves this scrutiny.
Misleading title, all she said is that she doesn’t want to be a sex symbol. Excuse her if she’d rather not be used as a sex symbol. This article is just insulting to those of us that wish to be honored for things we achieve and not our looks. She never asked to have such a title thrust upon her and its not your place to talk down about her because she dislikes the title. Talk about being hypocrites.
Yeesh. When think of Scarlet, yeah, I think of her as beautiful, but aren’t most female actresses at least somewhat pretty? Where did all this “sex symbol” stuff come from? You can be sexy for things other than JUST beauty. I would consider her sexier than Megan Fox, not only because I think she’s better looking, but because she has a good head on her shoulders an acting talent to match her beauty.
Woah, woah, woah! Never once did she say anything about pretty girls being dumb or ugly girls being smart. You’ve just committed the strawman fallacy… badly.
She doesn’t want to be thought of as “the sexiest woman alive” because people are paying more attention to her looks than her talent. She’s not complaining that she’s attractive. She doesn’t want that kind of physical attention. She wants to play characters, not bombshells and sexy ladies.
Regardless of how pretty she is, or regardless of how “ugly” another girl is, it’s hard not to be thought of as simply a physical object when that’s what you hear every day.
But she’s not. She gets more attention for being a great actress. She doesn’t play bombshells. She has never played a role (the way Megan Fox or Jessica Simpson has) where she is only eye candy. Even when she was a teen actress she played more dynamic roles than a generic “babe” and she has always been recognized for it. She is a talented actress and she also happens to be very attractive. She is equally lauded for being skilled and intelligent, which is probably the source of her always getting great parts. Being labelled a bombshell on top of that wouldn’t be such a big deal unless there was a negative association with it? Which is typically that being beautiful means you lack any other capabilities.
I agree! I feel like with this article, everything was taken out of context and ScarJo’s words have been twisted around.
She just said that she wants people to remember her for her acting, not how hot her body is or stuff like that. I’m pretty sure she didn’t want to be labelled as a sex symbol or bombshell on purpose; it just happened. Much like how people labelled Selena Gomez as a “good girl” although she had no intention as coming across as that.
Being attractive and pretty is really important to some girls. Scarlett should be blessed that people do consider her to be beautiful and “hot”, because I would do anything for that kind of positive attention. She’s famous, and she has it easy.. I just think she’s lucky.
