What Your Shoes Say About You: It’s CRAZY

Of all of the things you’re probably worried about being judged on, your shoes are probably the last thing you’d worry about. But what strangers actually think of you is found not on your waistline, in your hair, or in the size of your booty–it’s on your feet! Yep. Your shoes say a lot more about you than you think!

A new study says that we really can know you by your shoes, without any other visual cues whatsoever. Your shoes’ style, color, price, and condition all tell strangers quite a bit about your life. Say what?

The study went like this: Volunteers filled out questionnaires about themselves and their lives, then submitted a photo of their shoes. Other volunteers then had to guess, based solely (see what we did there?) on the shoes, the wearer’s social status, gender, and age. To be fair, if your shoes are hot pink flip-flips with rhinestones, it may be a little easier to guess your gender than, say, if your shoes are plain black Chucks, but still–the participants in the study got everything 90 percent right! That’s pretty impressive, right? Especially when you consider that the observers had to guess whether your shoes describe you as emotionally stable, liberal, conservative, extroverted, or introverted.

Some of your shoes’ signals are more obvious than others. If you’re rocking Louboutins, you’re likely in a different socioeconomic place than someone wearing less expensive heels. But did you know that people who wore ankle boots were more aggressive? And chances are if your shoes are a little uncomfortable, you’re a pretty calm person. Weird!

Another interesting note: If your shoes are kinda boring, you may have a hard time forming lasting relationships. The study implies that this is because people with boring shoes don’t care as much what others think about them. Makes some sense, no? But then again, “boring” is also in the eye of the beholder!

Conversely, if your shoes are spankin’ new, sparkling clean, and super fly, you may have attachment issues–and you may keep your shoes impressive in hopes of making sure people like you. (To which we say, people oughta love you for being awesome, not for your shoes!)

We should note that the study didn’t provide any specifics on certain types of footwear, but if you’re rocking Lucite heels, it’s safe to say your shoes may be giving a lot of people the wrong idea.

What do you think your shoes tell the world? Do your shoes start or complete your look? What style and color is your favorite out of your shoes? Tell us about your shoes in the comments!

My favorite are a worn down pair of grey black and blue sketches, I don’t wear them a lot since they don’t go good with my outfits so I wear black flats almost everywhere but they aren’t my favorite
