I could seriously write about 100 life lessons I’ve learned from Taylor Swift, but in the interest of everyone’s short attention span, I cut things like “Made me realize it’s OK to use a Sharpie as eyeliner in a pinch” and “Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with donuts” in favor of the toppest of the top things that Taylor Swift has taught us about life!

1. Surround Yourself with Friends
While some starlets (cough Lindsay Lohan cough) can’t stand a simple night in, Swifty is always Tweeting pics of her dorking out with her BFFs. And, gee let’s see, LiLo’s career is tanking while Tay made jillions last year. Coincidence? I think not.

2. Don’t Hold Things In
Dudes who end up in Taylor’s songs aren’t always thrilled to be the star of a poison-pen ballad. But T has explained that she’s not trying to be spiteful or cruel—she knows that if she can get out all the hurt, she can heal! It’s kind of like pulling out a splinter—why leave it inside and suffer? Screw the splinter. He was a douchebag anyway.

3. Compassion Isn’t Weakness
Confession: I can’t pass a homeless person without giving them money or buy them a sandwich. But while my friends call me a big, bleeding heart baby, I think about Taylor. She was awarded the Honorary Star of Compassion Award by Northwest Tennessee Disaster Services because she is such a great role model and so giving. That trait probably didn’t always make her the coolest kid at the party—just like I’m always the loser wrapping up other people’s leftovers to give away—but doing what’s right isn’t always popular, and what’s popular isn’t always right!

4. Never Become Jaded
Love isn’t always sunshine and kittens—Taylor knows this. Yet she never seems anything less than giggly and thrilled when a new crush comes her way. And you should too! True, when one romance ends, it feels like the world collapses right along with it. But you pick yourself up by your flirty new summer wedges and march on down the path to true love. At the end of the day, what other choice is there?

5. Don’t Chase Every Trend
When you picture Taylor Swift you probably see curly hair, sparkly dresses and red lips. She knows what she likes, and sticks with it, never a slave to trends. Maybe your go-to look is a pearl necklace or cowboy boots—you might not always be the trendiest chick in school but who cares as long as you’re being true to yourself!
