Back in March, gossip rags and the web (including us!) asked the same question: Is Miley Cyrus engaged? But the answer then was no–she was just rocking her own ring on her all-important finger. However, now she has a new one: Miley Cyrus confirmed that her boyfriend of three years, Liam Hemsworth, popped the question on May 31 with a 3.5 carat diamond ring. Cute!

We’re pretty stoked for Miley. She’s financially secure, she’s displayed mature attitudes about sex–we totally heart her! And let’s be real, Liam Hemsworth is not only physical perfection, but he has an Aussie accent. We can totally see why Miley Cyrus would be souped that he put a ring on it.

But! Despite how mature Miley is, she’s still young–and so is Liam! She’s 19, he’s 22. Though they both probably had to grow up faster than a lot of the rest of us did, a lot of the time you’re a much different person when you’re 30 than when you’re 20, so making a lifetime commitment at a young age can be a risky move. “Miley Cyrus Engaged!” may make for awesome headlines (and following the flak she got for LOL bombing, she could use them), but it might not be the perfect recipe for a long (or permanent!) marriage.

In addition to the normal obstacles that younger couples face (differences in opinion on kids, where to live, finances, etc.), Miley and Liam also have to deal with schedules that can be insane–he’s filming and promoting a ton of new movies following his rise to fame in The Hunger Games, and she’s hard at work on a new album. That distance and time apart can put a strain on any relationship, but if they’ve made it this far for this long, the signs look pretty good for them, right?

Though Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have been together for a while, they’ve had ups and downs–they broke up for a bit and reunited, and reports swirled that he was worried about her partying while she was scared of losing him because of his sudden burst in fame. Adding to her insecurity? When they first met on the set of The Last Song, he had a girlfriend back home in Australia, and you know the old adage: If they cheat with you, they may cheat on you. Just a heads up, Miley–we don’t wanna see you hurt!

One other thing to consider: “Miley Cyrus engaged to Liam Hemsworth” isn’t the same as “Miley Cyrus set a date for next weekend to marry Liam Hemsworth.” So they may well be taking their time and not necessarily rushing down the aisle–they just know they want to get there eventually. We really wish them all the best. Congrats again to the happy couple!
