Want something free and awesome to do this weekend? Then make the most of Free Comic Book Day!

It sounds almost too good to be true, but it’s not. Every year on the first Saturday in May, participating comic book stores will give away comic books for free. What better excuse to start flipping through them? You’ll discover a ton of cool super heroes and vigilantes you may have missed–as well as some kick ass girl comic book heroines as well.

This year’s Free Comic Book Day also happens to coincide with the opening weekend of The Avengers, so you can imagine how huge it’s going to be. Bonus? Comic book shops are usually teeming with cute, smart guys, especially on Free Comic Book Day!

Now that you know what Free Comic Book Day is all about, find a participating comic book shop near you and check out our list of our favorite comics below.

The Avengers

If you’re going to see the movie anyway, why not read the books and get the awesome back stories? Our girl Black Widow alone will keep you occupied for a while just with her adventures with fellow badass femme Agent 13.

Buffy

Miss the TV show? We do too! Get your fix in graphic novel form–and for free, since a lot of comic book shops are giving this series away!

Catwoman

Forget about the cheesy movie (we still love you, Halle Berry!)–the comic books represent a lot more girl power than that flick did, especiallywhen Selina Kyle kicks some serious ass (and then some) to save her sister. Plus, this will get you fired up for The Dark Knight Rises, in which Anne Hathaway will don the famous catsuit.

Promethea

A college girl who gains her powers from literature and imagination that can bring about the apocalypse–and has a sarcastic-as-hell BFF? Sounds pretty awesome to us.

Tank Girl

She dyes her hair and even farts occasionally. Sound like anyone you know?

The Unwritten

If you love Harry Potter, you will love this–the magic and the story within a  story are seriously addictive.

The Walking Dead

Get ahead on next season! The show doesn’t follow the books exactly, but you’ll have an idea of what’s in store–and get an early introduction to Michonne, the mysterious, super badass hooded character from the season 2 finale. (Finally, a strong woman! With a katana!) A word of warning, though–this series is not for the faint of heart!

Watchmen

The quintessential graphic novel series. You’ll probably have to read it more than once to get all of the references, but each time it gets better and better. (And as is often the case, while the movie was pretty good, the book is a lot different–and in our opinion a lot better!)

X-Men

There are an astonishing number of super-powerful women in this series–so many that they can’t possibly fit them all into the movies, so get to know them in the books!

Wonder Woman

Did you really think we’d forget about her?! While we’re a bit pissed that no one can get their ish together for her new TV series (as much as we heart Lynda Carter’s classic, we can use an update!) or a movie (seriously, wtf is the hold up here?), get your fix of her Lasso of Truth and Amazonian strength in the books.
