Why “Think Like A Man” When You Can Think Like A Woman?

Think Like A Man may be the only thing capable of defeating Katniss Everdeen. The romcom, based on Steve Harvey‘s book Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man, took the number 1 spot in the box office from The Hunger Games for the first time since the girl power movie debuted, earning a cool $33 million in its first weekend. The movie’s success surprised a lot of box office experts, but it probably shouldn’t have: Romantic comedies usually do well, and Think Like a Man was the only one of the genre to open last weekend.

We were pretty happy to see the movie doing so well if only because two of our favorite stars, Gabrielle Union and Meagan Good, finally got some of the attention they deserve! Remember when Meagan Good was in Roll Bounce and Gabrielle Union was a kickass cheerleader in Bring It On? They’ve both come so far!

Both Gabrielle Union and Meagan Good delivered awesome performances in Think Like A Man, which is pretty much your typical battle-of-the-sexes romantic comedy, and isn’t a bad movie by any means–but it’d be bad if girls take the movie too seriously.

It seems like the girls are presented pretty one-dimensionally in Think Like A Man: the “Ring Hunter,” the “Independent Woman,” the “Girl Who Makes Him Wait For It.” The guys are too: there’s your “Player,” your “Commitment Phobe,” your “Romantic Sap.” As a result, a lot of the advice that the movie doles out doesn’t take into account that if it’s applied to actual people, it may not work so well.

Plus, think of it this way: Based on how men are portrayed in this movie (“sports beer wings LOL!”), would you really want to think like a man? Granted, thinking like a woman, according to the film, means thinking like a master manipulator, so we’re not sure what’s worse. Sheesh!

If you can take the movie Think Like A Man at face value, that’s  great and you’ll probably enjoy it. But if you go home from it using cookie jars as metaphors for abstinence, it’s gone too far. Mind games and arbitrary rules aren’t the best way to start off a healthy relationship, because everyone–and every relationship–is different. Thinking like a man and thinking like a woman, if you’re both intelligent, considerate, and interested in one another, isn’t that much different.

The best advice isn’t to think like a man. It’s to think for yourself.

Actually, A lot of girls I know feel like they have to ‘act’ like a man and take this movie as a life lesson, the song to go with it too. Which bothers me cuz thinking like a women isnt bad.

What was the point in writing this article??

I completely agree with Lori. Think Like a Man is just a movie, nothing to take seriously, is just for entertainment. I feel like the authors at gurl took it too seriously. I mean, really? No one is reading into it that much lol.

Glad I’m not the only one bothered by this!

OMG shut up! I used to be a big fan of this website but I swear, more and more, the writers on here disgust me. WE ALL KNOW ITS JUST A MOVIE! If anyone leaves the theater, trying to apply it to their life, then they were TOO YOUNG to be watching it. And it sounds really corny how you guys wanna say that the movie was supposed to do well because it was the only romantic comedy coming out this over the weekend. Even if it wasn’t, it still would’ve done great. And I also think it sounds really corny how Meagan Good and Gabrielle Union were the only ones who got a shout-out from you. TARAJI P. HENSON IS IN IT TOO, along with a load of other great actors/actresses, especially Kevin Hart. But I guess the negative aura I got from this article is due to the fact that people must still be hung up on Hunger Games. YET I DONT SEE ANY KIDS IN THE STREETS TRYING TO SNIPER EACH OTHER OFF IN THE NAME OF A SURVIVAL CONTEST. How irrelevant this article was….
