7 Of Our Favorite Kickass Leading Ladies

Embrace Book

Another one of our fave leading ladies is right in this book!

I heart a kickass leading lady. A strong female lead will make me love any story in a big way. All you have to do is give me a girl fighting vampires, a woman breaking her innocent mother out of jail or a Dixie Chicks song about a friend saving her bestie from a terrible relationship, and I’m in. Seriously, a strong female character can make me like the Dixie Chicks. The Dixie Chicks!

Even though I love these strong leading ladies, I think it’s super ridiculous how they’re made up to look so fabulous when they’re so busy fighting injustice and saving the world. I mean, when I had the extra responsibility of cat sitting last week, I was so stressed I forgot to brush my hair three days in a row! Heroines have way more responsibility than opening a can of Fancy Feast, like, you know, the fate of the whole world, and somehow manage to look damn good doing it.

Here are some of my fave unbelievable babes with incredible responsibility…and beauty routines:

She-Ra

I can tell you that if I had to fight the evil powers of The Hord day in and day out, I wouldn’t suit up in a sexy metal girdle and matching headband. I’d go more yoga pants and my seventh grade softball team shirt, every time.

Powerpuff Girls

Pretty sure I wouldn’t look this happy if I found a million dollars covered in Nutella. They’re this smiley when they’re fighting crime.

Kimberly, The Pink Mighty Morphin Power Ranger

You couldn’t pay me enough to walk around the block in a pink cat suit. Kimberly dons one every time she saves the world. Props, girl, props.

Sookie Stackhouse
Anna Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse in True Blood

Wait tables, stay up all night with my undead boyfriend, explain fractions to my dumb dumb brother, fight whatever evil powers come my way, and have a cute blond ponytail? Sookie says, “No problem.” I’d say, “You’ve got to be kidding me…and are you sure Jason isn’t adopted?”

Claire Bennet
Hayden Panettiere as Claire Bennet in Heroes

As a former cheerleader, I can tell you that even on game day I didn’t look this good. And all I had resting on my shoulders was Gina Parlington during a lift. Claire has the entire world on hers!

Veronica Mars
Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars

Full time student, part time private investigator and her side swept bangs always look awesome. What kind of flat iron do you use, Veronica? I need to know!

Sailor Moon

You’d think with all of the evil she battles, she’d lose some of her sparkle. But, you’d be wrong. Sailor Moon always has that twinkle in her eye. Always!

Speaking of girls who carry a ton of responsibility and look great doing it, check out Embrace, the new release from Sourcebooks. Main character Violet Eden is the newest warrior in the centuries old battle between good and evil…and look at that pony tail! I think she used hot rollers!

Where do these girls find the time?

Who is your favorite female protagonist? What are you more impressed by—her kickassery or her hair ‘do? Tell us in the comments.
