shopping for a prom dress
Shopping for a prom dress is a girl’s rite of passage…and it’s also a great time to start lying to yourself and everyone around you. You’ve built up this night (and this dress!) so much that it’s hard to ever live up to your dreams. Here are some of the little white lies we tell ourselves while looking for the perfect dress.
The Inspiration:
She said: The look I’m going for is sorta Selena, sort of Victoria Justice.
She meant: Minus, of course, the celebrity styling team, the fame and fortune and their 22-inch waists. But other than that, yeah totes Sel and Vic.
A Dress that Dazzles:
She said: I really want to stand out Prom night. Like, I need a really unique dress.
She meant: Hmm…I wonder if my dad would pay to fly that designer from “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” out here…
Sparking Your Date’s Desire:
She said: I just really want to look perfect for the dance.
She meant: If my date doesn’t get that starry-eyed look when I emerge at the top of the stairs, I will throw myself down them.
Hair:
She said: Pfft I’m so over the whole updo thing. I’m going with soft waves, a la Gisele.
She meant: And after 15 minutes of dancing I’ll get annoyed with my hair and put it into a bun and hate every single picture from that point forward.
Finding the Perfect Fit:
She said: Umm I think this designer sizes things weird–do you guys have a bigger size?
She meant: When I leave for college, I’ll also blame the freshman 15 on the dorm dryers shrinking my clothes.
Make Up:
She said: I’ve been practicing this super hot neon eyeliner look that I think will looks so sick with my dress!
She meant: I just hope that when my date comments that I look like a rabid possum, you’re nearby with Kleenex.
Your Oh-So-Classic Style:
She said: I’m SO in love with my gown! I’ll totally have it for the rest of my life.
She meant: Twelve months from now, the magenta ruffles will make me cringe and I will totally deny that I wore it.

Can You Trust Him?
It’s my sophomore year and I’m wearing a midnight blue hand-me-down. I think I look all fancy and elegant now, but next year, when I’m designing my dress, I”l probably look back and be embarrassed that it was so plain.
HA! I never say any of this stuff. To me, prom wasn’t that big of a deal. I just wish the dress I made for my senior prom turned out better, it really did make me look fat.
