ideas for prom
Is prom the best, the greatest, and the most significant event you will ever attend in your whole entire life? Um, obviously. (Or at least, it’s the best, greatest, and most significant event for which you will ever be allowed to skip school to get your hair done… which is, y’know, almost the same thing.)
But even though prom is a big deal and a great time, there’s no need to blow your life savings in order to have fun – and you’ll appreciate a less-expensive prom that much more when you realize how much money you have left over for other things. Like, y’know, pizza. And college. And ordering pizza at college.
The good news: for the promgoer on a budget, there are plenty of ways to save cash while still having fun – and don’t worry, none of them involve making your own dress using dental floss and squirrel pelts.
Are you ready to have a lavish prom for less? Here’s how!
Rent your dress!
Sites like Rent the Runway offer you the chance to get a seriously glam gown for a fraction of the retail cost – meaning that you can look like a million bucks in some designer duds, but only spend under $100.
Get thrifting!
Consignment shops, antiques boutiques, Goodwill, the Salvation Army and your local thrift stores are a great resource for formalwear and accessories on the cheap – and if you want to really stand out, these shops are your best bet for scoring one-of-a-kind vintage gowns or sparkly deco jewelry.

I bought my gown at a vintage dress shop. The dress is from the 50′s and it flew to my hometown all the way from London. It will definitely be a one of a kind! I didn’t have to spend my life savings either.
If you’re going to prom next school year, start looking for your dress after this year’s prom season is over. Department stores like JCPenny and Macy have prom dresses on sale for really low prices after the height of the season is over. When I was a sophomore, I got my dress for junior prom for $25 when it was originally $135. Sure, this means buying your dress a year in advance, but if you want to save mega bucks, it’s worth it. And the sale dresses are really cute!
im homeschooled so im never gunna have a prom
I have had friends who are homeschooled that went to prom with other friends, you just have to ask around.
