Breakups look pretty darn good on Adele. A broken heart was the force behind most successful album of the last year (and of her career), 21, because it’s a sentiment everyone can relate to. As she said last night, “This album was inspired by something everyone’s been through: a rubbish relationship!”
The Brit powerhouse wasn’t the only songstress there inspired by guys being jerks. Jennifer Hudson broke out into superstardom during her showstopping performance of “And I Am Telling You (I’m Not Going)” in Dream Girls, an ode to the initial denial everyone feels when she knows her relationship is ending: You don’t want to believe it because it hurts too badly. Her emotional performance in the movie paved the way for her emotional performance last night in her tribute to Whitney Houston. Even Katy Perry rocked out to her new song, “Part Of Me,” letting a certain ex know he’ll never get the best of her.
That said, now that these ladies have moved on with their lives (how cute was Adele with her new boyfriend last night?!), it’s time for them to let these dudes — or should we say duds? — go.
And the same goes for you, too, girl! It’s Break Up With Your Ex Day. We all have that one jerk we can’t seem to get over, whether it’s because we thought we messed up ourselves or because he was so mean that he makes us think there’s something wrong with us and that we’re not lovable or worthy of anyone else. Ladies, it’s time to let it go and move forward!
The best place to start? Digitally. You know deep down that you’re not going to get over this clown if he keeps showing up in your news feed (and if you keep lurking him)! Unfriend him, unfollow him, and delete his number. Seriously, what good can come out of texting him at 11PM? Note: If he wants to be friends, that’s great. But keep in mind that a real friend will give you the space you need to move on before expecting to be buddy-buddy with you. (Plus, you probably have enough friends.)
Then, get charitable. You know that old sweatshirt that you hated on him until you broke up and it was the last thing of his left at your apartment–so then of course it became a treasured memento of your undying love? Yeah. It’s still ugly, and you should give it to Salvation Army, pronto. Think of it this way–your heartbreak can keep someone else warm this winter!
