Pop culture is overflowing with male superheroes, and don’t get me wrong, I like a hot guy in spandex as much as the next girl, maybe even more, but don’t we deserve our day in the sun? A chance to show the world that we’re not damsels in distress. That we can do more than be the geeky-computer-hacking assistant. That we’re not just the girlfriend who doesn’t know her boyfriend has been leading a double life (how much do we hate her?).Girls can kick major butt and it’s about time we got to show it. The closest thing we’ve had to a female superhero has been Chloe Moretz in Kick-Ass and the occasional beautiful mutant in the X-Men franchise. But being one of the guys isn’t the same as leading a franchise to box office history.
Not to get all Girl Power on you, but we would totally rock it if we ever got the chance to strut our superhero stuff! We have way better intuition than guys do. We know when people are lying. (I’m pretty sure Wonder Woman’s golden lasso was just a prop!) We use common sense and street smarts when faced with a problem; we’re not ruled by our pride. Pride will sink a guy every time. And we’re strong, even stronger when motivated by competition, and what’s more competitive than saving the world?Hopefully someday soon a girl superhero is going to be the STAR of the movie, get to save the world (and her boyfriend) from evildoers and have her picture on the front page of the fake newspaper. Until Hollywood gets its act together we’ll just have to put up with Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and Andrew Garfield, I know, it’s gonna be tough. At least we have some real female superheroes to look up to until then like Michelle Obama, Tina Fey, and Gabrielle Giffords. They may not have the costume, but they sure have the attitude!
