Okay, sometimes I hear that a girl is cool and I’m like, “yeah, whatevs,” but Alek Wek is beyond cool. We’re talking supernova superhero superstar cool—but then you probably already knew that from seeing her guest judge the latest cycle of America’s Next Top Model. Where else might you recognize her from? Oh maybe just a Janet Jackson video, one of the best Clinique ads ever, and high-fashion runway shows worldwide. The woman is everywhere.
But Alek is so much more than meets the eye.
Alek grew up in Sudan, a country where a super terrible civil war has been going on for decades, where women are sexually abused by soldiers, and where people go hungry not to be skinny, but because there isn’t enough food. When Alek was just fourteen, she and her sister escaped to England, where they started a new life (and where Alek was first discovered by modeling scouts!).
Today, amidst her super glam lifestyle of fashion shows and photo shoots, Alek is dedicated to making a better world for all of us to live in. She helps the United Nations figure out the best ways to help refugees from war-torn countries, and gives a lot of her time to UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders. Recently, she told Newsweek that she’s spreading global awareness by teaching school kids about the famine in Africa and what it’s like to not have enough food on your plate.
And best of all? She lives out her beliefs every day at home and in her heart. “Many live to eat, instead of the other way around,” she said. “In restaurants in my Brooklyn neighborhood, I always ask for a doggie bag, to bring the leftovers home. My ex-boyfriend suggested more than once that I cut this out, as he found it embarrassing. (Perhaps that’s why he is no longer my boyfriend.)”
Dumping a guy for dissing your awesome global-friendly ways? Alek, I couldn’t love you more!
