Survey Says: Sex Education

Did your mom tell you? Was it awful?

Remember when you thought babies really did come from a giant white stork? Sigh. The innocence. Then, one day, someone told you where babies really did come from and what sex really meant, and you’ve never looked at a stork the same way since. That first time you learned might be a funny story to tell now (or just an uncomfortable one), but at the moment your little mind was probably pretty blown. We want to know — how did you first learn about sex?

Fill out the survey and tell us your experience with learning the adult stuff. Just copy and paste the survey into the comments (you need to log in) and tell us.

1. How old were you when you first learned about sex?
2. Who told you?
3. Did you feel really uncomfortable having the conversation, or were you fine with it?
4. Were you totally disgusted, or just a little curious?

    1. How old were you when you first learned about sex? I learned bit by bit. It all started in the fifth grade.

    3. Did you feel really uncomfortable having the conversation, or were you fine with it?
    4. Were you totally disgusted, or just a little curious? The book left me confused, honestly. The whole thing was really vague. ‘Mommy and daddy want a kid, they do some stuff, sperm meets egg, bam! A baby!’
    5. What was the funniest part about the conversation (did you cry, did you freak out, etc.)? I wish I had had a conversation with my parents. But alas, no.

    7. Did (or do) you learn about sex in school? I did in 9th grade. By then I knew everything already lol
    8. Before you knew the truth, where did you think babies came from (if you thought about it at all)? I never thought about it until my mom got pregnant with my sister. I asked her if she had swallowed a watermelon.

    14. Did you immediately share the information with all of your friends? No way, I was so shy as a kid lol

    16. Do you wish you found out in a different way than you did? Yes. I wish my parents had explained it to me. Then we’d have a better relationship now.
    17. Do you remember the first time you saw people having sex in a movie? Yep. That was when the concept really clicked.
    18. Growing up, were your parents very open about sexual things, or were they more conservative? They aren’t opposed to sex, but to this day they are very weird about it. We are "abstinence only" so we learn about sperm and we learn about eggs and we learn about fetus development, yada yada yada, but we never talk about "yes, penises can go in vaginas" or about homosexual intercourse of any type. I'm pretty sure the closest we get to sex is the video that depicts two people in body suits doing an intricate, non-sexy dance…

    15. Have you ever had to teach someone about sex for the first time? I never *had* to, but I have, yes.
    16. Do you wish you found out in a different way than you did? No.

    18. Growing up, were your parents very open about sexual things, or were they more conservative? Relatively open.
    19. Do you feel like you were really misinformed about sex when you were younger? I was misinformed to believe (for a while) that one shouldn't ever have sex before marriage.
