Zooey Deschanel Thinks Just Because You’re A gURLy gURL Doesn’t Mean You’re Not Powerful. WDYT?

Are you as gURLy as Zooey?

Zooey Deschanel recently gave an interview with New York Magazine, and in the outtakes (the quotes that didn’t make it into the article), she said she should be able to be as much of a gURLy gURL as she wants to be and still be taken seriously as a woman.

She said, “I think there was a generation before us that felt like they needed to act like men to be taken seriously, like they had to use their sexuality to take control of people. I don’t judge people for that. But I don’t want to take all my clothes off and use myself as an object.”

“I’m going to wear whatever I want to wear, because I’m expressing myself and I deserve that right. You’re not demeaning yourself by acting girle.”

Zooey added, “I like being feminine. I think it’s good to be feminine. We don’t need to look like men or dress like men or talk like men to be powerful. We can be powerful in our own way, our own feminine way.”

WDYT, gURLs? Do you agree with Zooey (and love her as much as we do)? Do you describe yourself as a ‘gURLy gURL’? Do you think gURLs should be able to be taken seriously even if they’re very  feminine? Discuss below!

i totally agree w/her! whats wrong w/bing feminine? if u wanna b masculine then u should dress like a guy n i kno alotta girls do! a girly girl is a good thing and guys don’t have a clue as 2 why. xcept when they get married… then they know why a woman is a girlie girl… bcause she’s a girl! DA!

I agree with her. There seems to be an opinion amongst many that you can’t be feminine and a feminist at the same time, but of course you can.
Being a strong woman has nothing to do with how you dress, it’s all about your attitude towards yourself and your life. If feminine is who you are that’s great, if it’s not then that’s also great. Being true to yourself is the most important thing.

    that is completely true.

Yes! I loved her response! gUrly gUrl doesn’t have to mean you like, flip your hair, like all the time and like, totally wear, like, only THE latest trends, and like, act like an airhead.
Its time we need to embrace our femininity as sophisticated and not like a cutesy-little bunny cause i personally think thats a bit commercial.

If you truly want to be a powerful woman, embrace YOURSELF! Dont try to embrace femininity by wearing cleavage bearing, plunge necklines or whatever. You are a woman so you are a total natural at being feminine. So if you embrace yourself, you cant be knocked down.

I totally agree with Zooey. I am really happy that someone in Hollywood has come out and said that. I feel like a lot of girls are told from young teens to adulthood that being a girly girl is bad. Like Elle Woods(the character) and Taylor Swift and two great examples of women who are feminine and powerful and successful . I get a lot of crap from people esp. other girls because I wear too much pink and I like sparkly cute-sy stuff. They say I’m childish and immature but I’m not. I know what I like and I don’t care what anyone else thinks. It’s their opinion, it’s not a fact.
