Demi Lovato made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (which will air on Tuesday, 9/20), where she talked about how she wants to be a “role model” for young gURLs. With everything she’s gone through and had to deal with, um, we’re pretty sure she defintiely is a role model.
Demi brought up her battle with eating disorders, saying, “I want to be that for a 13-year-old gURL at home deciding whether or not to eat dinner, or an 18-year-old gURL deciding whether or not to keep her breakfast down.”
She admits that before she got treatment, her life was a “mess”: “So many things were going great in my life, and then all of a sudden my personal life just went down at crazy speeds. I had a negative breakdown and it changed my life forever. But if I hadn’t gone into treatment, I don’t know if, one, I’d even be sitting here today, [or] two, if I’d be alive today.”
One thing we love about Demi? Her total honesty about all of her issues, no matter how bad they were. She says she wants to be able to be that outspoken because, “It was the time in the tabloids when very, very skinny gURLs were on the cover of every magazine, and that’s what I was looking up to. That’s what I had to idolize. I don’t want that for young gURLs to idolize.”
WDYT, gURLs? Do you see Demi as a role model? Is she the kind of gURL you want to look up to? Or are you not a fan of her? Discuss below!

Demi is absolutely a role model to girls nd young women everywhere. FINALLY, we’re seeing someone from Hollywood be REAL with their fans and the entire world. Demi dealt with some sh!t, just like every person does. But what makes her stand out from most all other celebrities is the way by which she has opened up about her struggles and used her fame for the better; she has used her voice to support girls all over who are dealing with things like negative self-image, eating disorders, self-harm, and more. So, no, she’s not perfect. She doesn’t have a squeeky clean past. But she’s not afraid to admit her mistakes and move on, and she accepts the fact that she has her flaws. She inspires me every single day. No matter what anyone else says, Demi is my role model.
I think if there is anyone in the entertainment industry who can be looked up to as a role model is is Demi. Her honesty and positivity are really inspiring. I’m glad that she’s received treatment and that she knows the negative effects of an ultra-thin society and is making other people aware of it and making them believe in self-acceptance. Though I’m not a fan, per-say, I definitely respect her and her actions.
i hate this girl sooo much she looks like a donkey and she has no talent it doesn’t surprise me at all that she cut her wrists and that she had an eating disorder the only reason she’s famous right now is because she cut her wrists and threw up a little i mean seriously she is an awful actor and every time i hear her talk i just want her to shut up already she is no role model i wouldn’t be surprised if she became an alcoholic she’s so off the handle that she can’t stay normal for as long as it takes to create a role model image
There’s a difference between being bulimic and “throwing up a little”.
She is a great role model and she is a great singer. And she was a star before she ever cut her wrists or became bulimic. If you cant say nothing nice dont say it at all.
Stop your hate. Demi is beautiful and far more talented than you may ever realize. Stop being a cyberbully. You can throw as much negativity as you’d like toward Demi – it will only make her stronger.
Her openness makes her a good role model forget what anyone else says
As someone with an eating disorder who knows just how difficult (read: impossible) recovery can be, I can say that she’s become a major role model for me.
It’s like… holy sh!t, I can fix this. If she can get help and recover, so can I.
I’m so glad she’s chosen to speak up and speak out. Too much of the media focuses on “Oh no, this celeb has an eating disorder, gross/disgusting/unsafe/too thin/whatever” and “This celeb went to rehab for this issue, shock and horror.” But no one discusses the aftermath… the getting better. And isn’t that the important thing? Making the choice to take control of your life?
I really think that she is an amazing role model and she has helped me through my eating disorder. I wake up every morning now and say “Not today but maybe tomorrow.” because tomorrow never comes it has been easy to get through everything. Thanks a lot Demi!
I DEFINATELY think Demi is a role model
she got help and now she’s helping those with the same problems that she had
Demi is an amazing role model. Yes she had her problems but she got help. She knew that she was doing was wrong. She is living proof that people do go through these things and there is always a way to get help! I love Demi
I think she is definitely a role model because she openly discusses issues and she acknowledges that she is not completely recovered, but that it’s a daily struggle. Also, she is fully aware of past mistakes she has made & it takes a lot to admit that and work towards changing yourself for the better.
She’s a def role model!! She spoke out that she had problems and that she WANTED them to be fixed! She goes straight out to people and tells them to back off and that she’s dealing with it and how some people need to let her breath. She is amazing
Demi, YOU ROCK!!
