Klu Klux Klan
Maybe you’ve heard of this hate group by it’s more popular abbreviation, KKK. This group advocates white supremacy, white nationalism, anti-immigration, and anti-communism. It’s well known for its costumes, which are all white robes, masks and a cone shaped hat, meant to be scary and hide their identities.
The first Klan started in the South (of the US) in the 1860’s, but died out in the early 1870’s. The second KKK spread nationwide in the early and mid 1920’s, and also introduced cross burnings. The third KKK came about after World War II and was about civil rights movement and progress among minorities.
The KKK worked during the night, attacking black people and brutally murdering them. They killed many important black leaders, and did everything they could to ensure that black people didn’t see progress in anything (like voting and freedom of speech).
The KKK is still around today, and their campaigns are now based on issues like illegal immigration, urban crime and same-sex marriage. The Anti-Defamation League says there are at least five thousand KKK members throughout the country.
