If you don’t already know who Katie Leclerc is, well, we’re pretty sure you’ll be really familiar with her very soon — as we found out in this video, this is one super inspiring gURL.
Katie, who plays the hearing-impaired Daphne on ABC Family’s Switched At Birth, was born with Ménière’s disease, meaning she suffers from hearing loss and vertigo, but she hasn’t let it stop her from following her dreams and living her life. We caught up with her to talk about bullies, dealing with her disease, and… dating guys with guns?
Watch the video to hear her kick-ass advice (and watch her awesome sign-language skills) and more:
WDYT about Katie’s advice about bullying, gURLs? Do you know anyone with Ménière’s disease, or do you have it yourself? Are you going to tune into Switched At Birth? Let us know in the comments!

i love switched at birth there is a girl in mt class who is deaf i think it is pretty cool that she is in my class because we can learn sign language
I love Switched at Birth!
Hello??!!! The video was not in sign language or even captioned… How many deaf kids are able to watch this and understand, do you think? Society needs to keep that in mind providing us accessibility at all times. I love the show for bringing awareness, but at the same time, things have not changed much. Hopefully, that will not be true as time goes on.
They never said the video would be in sign launguage. They said “check out her amazing skills” and when she was doing the intro and ending, she showed them.
And none of the videos on here are captioned I’m pretty sure.
But I can agree with you. Although pretty much every tv has closed captioning so people who can’t hear well can still watch tv.
The show is wonderful, it tells you so simply what it is to be in a family that has to deal with a handicap. All the actors seem to work so well together
I was surprised at how different from her character she sounds.
There’s no captions on this one!!!!! Please put captions in there when you can!
I wonder why it has no closed captions for deaf or hard of hearing people like us to watch the interview with Katie LeClerc or why couldn’t she sign the whole thing at same time she talk? But love Katie LeClerc though.
You have the monopoly on useful inrfomationaren’t monopolies illegal?
She has Meniere’s disease which does mean she has hearing loss. Katie is a former student of mine and she has overcome obstacles to get where she is today, which means that nothing is out of reach if you work hard and believe in yourself.
back then i was baby i dont have disease but i died for 7 min i turn 1 to 4 i couldnt talk i can hear then i was 5 i become hard of hearing then i was 6 i wear my hearing aids then i start signing when i was 7th to 12th grade
Are you def in real life katie lacare
Your arictles are for when it absolutely, positively, needs to be understood overnight.
