Celebs Who Broke Up and Remained Friends

Don't believe you and your ex can ever be friends again? If stressed out, ultra-public celebrity couples can do it, pretty much anyone can.

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz

Together: The couple had been linked since the fall of 2006, and were married for two-and-a-half years.

Reason for Splitting Up: Ashley wrote "irreconcilable differences" on the divorce papers.

The two have been seen hanging out together in Los Angeles with their son, Bronx. And Pete made a public statement, saying, "Ashlee's been my best friend for five years. She's the mother of my child...I have nothing but love and respect for her."

Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron

Together: The two met in 2005 while filming High School Musical, and became a romantic item about two years later. They broke up around December 2010.

Reason for Splitting Up: Vanessa told Shape their crazy work schedules were to blame: "Long-distance relationships are hard no matter what...When you don't have face-to-face time, it's just different. Having an iPhone helped, but it just wasn't the same."

V-Hud has nothing but nice things to say about her ex. "We grew up together," she explains. "It was nice to have someone to share all of those experiences with...It was a good thing. The relationship kept me grounded, and because I was with someone who knew me so well, I didn't need to try to be someone I'm not." Apparently, Zac also visited her (as a friend) on set while she was filming Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley

Together: Between dating and marriage, they lasted six-and-a-half years.

Reason for Splitting Up: Rumors spread that Avril dumped Deryck and told him she was leaving him, but it's on the books as "irreconcilable differences."

Avril and Deryck have been spotted hanging out together at parties. Shortly after their divorce, Avril told the press, "I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship. I admire Deryck and have a great amount of respect for him. He is the most amazing person I know, and I love him with all my heart."

Demi Moore and Bruce Willis

Together: Demi met and married actor Bruce Willis in 1987, had three daughters together, and divorced in 2000.

Reason for Splitting Up: The couple gave no public reason, but Bruce did tell reporters, "I felt I had failed as a father and a husband by not being able to make it work."

Demi and Bruce are basically the role models for making a seemingly 'dysfunctional' family work. Bruce has even said, "It's hard for people to understand, but we go on holidays together...We still raise our kids together -- we still have that bond." He's even a fan of Ashton Kutcher, "I'm thrilled that Ashton turned out to be such a great guy."

Miley Cyrus and Nick Jonas

Together: Two years

Reason for Splitting Up: Miley told Seventeen, "For two years he was basically my 24/7. But it was really hard to keep it from people. We were arguing a lot, and it really wasn't fun."

After they split in 2008, Miley and Nick recorded breakup ballad "Before the Storm." Miley then wrote "7 Things," a song all about hating/loving your ex, and (years later) recently tweeted at Nick, "I always look at you during 7 things You've been with me thru it all Sometimes you grow out of a song but that one means the same."

Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas

Together: A couple of months (and not long after Miley and Nick called it quits)

Reason for Splitting Up: The two were very hush-hush, but sources say it was because of their "busy schedules."

Apparently Nick makes for a great ex. Selena says she and him still hang out: "I try to be a good person and a good friend to people...That's something that's very important to me. Nick is a very good friend. He's a lovely guy, we're good friends and I enjoy his company!"

Blake Lively and Penn Badgley

Together: Three years

Reason for Splitting Up: Since the two are such private people, even friends don't entirely know. Said one pal at the time, "It didn't seem like anything was off at all and no one said anything."

Now

Since they're still starring in Gossip Girl together, Blake and Penn totally seem to make it work. They laugh, hang out, and even hug on set.

Adam Lambert and Drake LaBry

Together: About a year

Reason for Splitting Up: Back when it happened, a source told Us Weekly, "Adam is crazy busy right now...They both felt this moment is too important for Adam to focus on anything else but getting this album out and having it be a huge hit."

Adam swears he and Drake are still buds. "People run into differences. We're still very good friends."

Ashley Tisdale and Jared Murillo

Together: Two years

Reason for Splitting Up: A friend said that they "just grew apart, but are remaining friends."

The Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure star has never said a nasty word about Jared. It seems like Ashley is more into a quiet, laid-back type of relationship, as she's stated, "I always have to be dressed up all the time for my work so when I'm home I just like to be in sweats and comfortable."

Courtney Cox and David Arquette

Together: Married eleven years.

Reason for Splitting Up: There are lots of rumors, but it seems like Courtney dumped David. He's called himself a failure, and she told Howard Stern that he was obsessed with sex: "Whenever I would need consoling from David...he could not literally put his arm around me for one second without completely getting a boner." Yikes.

Now

The Scream 4 stars say they're still "best friends". David swears, "Tabloids make it like there's some kind of scandal going on. But there's no scandal."

Together: On-again-off-again for about a year.
