What’s a cult? Well, there isn’t a clear-cut definition of one, but the general consensus is that a cult is a group of people who worship the same system of beliefs or devote themselves to the same ideals or teachings of a charismatic leader. You might be thinking that sounds an awful lot like organized religion, right? Well that’s probably because, for the most part, they’re very similar.
Since cults tend to be new, small groups with controversial ideas, the term is used by predominate religious groups to devalue a cult’s beliefs and customs. The term makes most people think mass suicide and UFOs rather than religious organization.
