Why pretend to masturbate? Either do it or don’t? On your period it’s your choice, and can actually help relieve cramps. As for where, the bathroom is the best place, especially if you want privacy. Read some guides about using the shower head. A directed stream of water bouncing of your clitoris is amazing, great if you’re on your period too.
