I have been dealing with acne for four years. It gets really bad at times all over my face. It has cleared up significantly recently but now i am left with nasty red scars from the pimples. It has really affected my life, i have trouble seeing that i am pretty when all i can see are the red marks on my face. I have talked to my doctor and everything but nothing works and i have lost so much confidence over this. Sometimes i feel as though no boy is ever going to like me because of how I
Dealing with acne is not fun at all. It does mess with your self-esteem and I’m so sorry you’ve had to endure. It’s especially frustrating that some people NEVER have to deal with it!
I’m so glad to hear that you’re going to a dermatologist and it’s improving. It will go away eventually, although even my 70 year old mom will get a pimple from time to time. And the good news is, that there are treatments that can help fade the scars over time. Here a few tips:
As tempting as it is, try not to squeeze, pick at or pop your zits–it can make them worse. Popping can cause permanent scars–or, by forcing the oil and bacteria into deeper skin layers, it can cause cysts. Also, make sure you wear sunscreen everyday, no matter what time of year it is. Exposure to the sun causes the skin damage and delays healing!

Exfoliate your face, neck and back daily. I wouldn’t recommend too harsh of scrubs, but using a product with fine exfoliants are great. If you use a gentle exfoliator on your face every day, you’ll me sloughing off any dead skin to not only prevent new pimples, but also reveal fresher skin that will regenerate faster and help those scars fade faster. I love Dermalogica’s Clean Start line, Go Clear, LUSH Cosmetics Ocean Salt, Burt’s Bees Natural Acne Solutions pore refining scrub, and I would ask your dermatologist which one may be right for you.
With your doc’s blessing, you can also try once weekly at home peels. These work a little harder than a daily peel to get rid of gritty dead skin as they contain strong acids or retinols to increase skin production. You might look a little raw after it, so do it at night and your skin will recover by morning. Some brands that work well on acne scars include Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare’s Alpha Beta Peel, The Brazilian Skin Peel, and Philosophy.
And finally, you can talk to your doc about laser resurfacing. Lasers work by essentially burning the top layers of skin and then it heals replacing the burned layers with newer appearing skin.
But even if you do none of this, a few scars doesn’t make you not beautiful. One of the best ways to help out your self-esteem is to not look for boys for it, but to look to yourself. I know, I know… but seriously, I think you need to go out and have some fun! Try to relax about your skin a little bit. Although I can understand your insecurity, the fact is that stress itself can cause acne–and practicing yoga, meditating, writing in your journal, hanging out with your friends, playing with your pet or at least learning a less stressful way to think about your zits, could help and you’re finding a way to keep your zits from getting in the way so much.
When you start to see that your zits are not WHO you are, then other people–including guys–are more likely to see that too.
