my friend takes advantage of me

dear heather,
I always do stuff for my friend and she takes advantage of it! What should I do?
Dealing with mean girls in high school is tough, but there’s nothing worse than when your friends turn on you. A friendship should be equal parts give and take, and if she’s not holding up her end of the deal, something needs to change — stat.

It’s possible that your friend has had so much on her mind that she’s forgotten to take note that she owes you; it’s also possible that she’s blissfully unaware of what a great BFF you are. Regardless, she has no excuse to take advantage of you.

In this case, honesty is the best policy — honestly. Although it sounds sort of terrifying to bring something like this up with your friend, ease into it like this, “You’ve been my friend for a long time and I really like you, but you haven’t been a great friend to me lately.” See? Not too tough. If she doesn’t get it, gradually stop giving her your time and energy, and she should notice in no time.

Whatever you do, don’t ignore your aggravations. If you let it build up too long, you’ll end up resenting the situation and you’ll likely lose a friend in the long run.

take care,
