i need help timing my birth control

dear heather,
I took birth control for the first time ever yesterday at 10 pm, because I figured it would be a convenient time for me to take it every day, but I realized that it’s not. I was wondering, it being my first pill and all, if I would be able to change the time to between 9 am – 12 pm , because that would be a better time. It’s currently 1:18 am, so would I be able to take the pill again between 9 am and 12 pm, and not have it screw me up and not work for like two months?
Yes. You can change the time you take your pill, especially if it’s just the second pill you’ve ever taken. You want to be on a schedule so you take the pill at the same time every day, but you don’t have to be crazy about taking it a few minutes or even an hour off.

But you are right to be concerned about the pill not being effective if you don’t take it close to the same time every day. If you happen to forget one pill, don’t freak out, just take two the next day at your regular time and the pill will still be effective. Try not to forget too many times because then the effectiveness of your birth control decreases. But it sounds like you’re off to a good start by being concerned about the timing.

Hope that helps!

take care,

I recently forgot to take my birth control pills for over three days and just decided to start over with a new pack when i started my period. I am waiting to have sex until i know i am protected. Is it true that if you start a new pack of pills on the same day that you start your cycle, you are protected in one week? Or is it always in one month regardless of when you start?
